There were no style points rewarded, but in the end the Irish came out victorious. As Boston College freshman quarterback Dave Shinskie's pass hit linebacker Brian Smith in the chest, Notre Dame won another football game that was too close for comfort, and left many Irish fans scratching their head, wondering what -- if any -- positives they can take out of the hard fought victory. Still, the Irish are 5-2, and put to an end a streak of six losses to Boston College. While the Eagles' defensive game plan and excellent special teams kept Notre Dame's offense in tough situations, the Irish did what it had to do to win 20-16. That included forcing five turnovers -- two from running back Montell Harris, who had yet to cough the ball up all season -- and three interceptions by the besieged Irish passing defense. The Irish shut down the Eagles' running attack, holding Harris to only 38 yards on 22 carries, and constantly won the battle on first down.
Last week, a common refrain was that there are no such things as moral victories. If that is the case, then there is no such thing as bad wins, either. Let's take a look at the five things we learned from the 20-16 win over Boston College.
1) Notre Dame can win ugly.
With the score 3-2 at the end of the first quarter, it was apparent that this was going to be an ugly football game. Boston College's ability to absolutely dominate the field position battle and refusal to play tight coverage on Notre Dame's receivers meant that they were willing to give Notre Dame 6 yards a play, if only to prevent them from taking 60. For the most part, Clausen and the Irish offense obliged, constantly throwing quick hitches and comebacks, and settling for 1-on-1 plays on the perimeter. Clausen spread the ball to seven different teammates, including the first two catches of Roby Toma's career. BC focused their defensive game plan on stopping Kyle Rudolph and Golden Tate. They achieved half of their goal.
No one will call this one of Notre Dame's better performances, but if anything it was admirable in its workman-like traits. The Irish never wavered from their game plan. They ran the ball effectively with Armando Allen going for just under 5 yards per carry, and took what the defense gave them. Even if they didn't play well, they still won the football game. Good teams win when they don't have their best. I'm not ready to say Notre Dame's a good team, but this certainly was a win that good teams get.
2) Notre Dame avoided the biggest pothole of the season.
There's was no bigger trap game this season than today's tilt against the Eagles, and secretly I'm sure the coaching staff is absolutely relieved they walked away with a win. Just think about all the things stacked up against Notre Dame. Not only did the Irish lose a soul-crushing game to USC last week, but there was a bizarre amount of mutual respect and love being shared between two programs that absolutely hate each other. Notre Dame and Charlie Weis' respect for Mark Herzlich was one of the under-reported stories of the year, but it was just plain weird seeing an All-American linebacker for Boston College being presented a Notre Dame game jersey right before kickoff. These are the guys that have trashed Notre Dame locker rooms, have torn up pieces of the field, have done every single thing you could imagine to poke and prod -- and recently dominate -- a team that should be their superior. If you're Notre Dame, you've got to be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, and if Notre Dame can get by a mediocre Washington State team in San Antonio next week, they'll get Michael Floyd back and prepare to unleash some offensive firepower.
3) Notre Dame might have another Heisman contender
I'm all for promoting what Jimmy Clausen is doing out on the field this season, but it's time to take a hard look at Golden Tate and ask why he's not in the Heisman Trophy discussion. He's got 847 receiving yards through 7 games, and is averaging nearly 7.5 catches per game and over 16 yards per catch. He's also doing most of this damage since Michael Floyd went down, when defensive coordinators are trying everything they can to stopping #23. He was in the top 6 for yards on the season before his game today, and with no front-runner stepping forward to seize the award, why not mention Notre Dame's most explosive weapon. His three consecutive 100 yard games are the first time a Notre Dame receiver has done that since Derrick Mayes in 1995, and while his numbers certainly warrant a place in the discussion, his chances might actually be hurt by having another teammate share the spotlight with him.
4) The defense still hasn't figured it out.
While the Irish limited Boston College to just 349 yards and 14 offensive points, this is still a defense that is struggling mightily. How can a team continue to give up such gigantic chunks of yardage through the air? The Irish gave up 10 passing plays of 20 yards or more, which is just unacceptable any way you look at it. Rich Gunnell took his turn decimating the Irish secondary, making 10 catches for 179 yards. Not that he should feel special, because every week a different character lights up the ND secondary with big plays. Check out the guys that have either put up 90 yards receiving or gone for 20+ yards per catch:
I'm running out of things to say about this Irish pass defense. Even with an incredible win rate on first down, they still managed to let freshman quarterback Dave Shinskie throw for 279 yards, and if it weren't for 3 gift interceptions, he'd have had plenty more opportunities. Right now, the secondary is playing with zero confidence, and a promising talent like Harrison Smith looks absolutely clueless out there.
Gunnell, BC: 179 yards -- 17.9 per catch
Larmond, BC: 61 yards -- 20.3 per catch
McCoy, USC: 153 yards -- 30.6 per catch
Williams, USC: 108 yards -- 27 per catch
Kearse, UW: 94 yards -- 11.8 per catch
Goodwin, UW: 65 yards -- 21.7 per catch
Johnson, UW: 59 yards -- 29.5 per catch
Smith, Purdue: 136 yards -- 12.4 per catch
Taylor, Purdue: 38 yards -- 38.0 per catch
Valentin, Purdue: 36 yards -- 36.0 per catch
Dell, MSU: 121 yards -- 20.2 per catch
I'm not going to say that this defense didn't improve, because it's obvious that they did this week. Sergio Brown looked good playing free safety, and his forced fumble was just another big play he's made in his limited time on the field. Plus, anytime you can force five turnovers and hold a team to 2.4 yards per carry you're doing something right. But this defense makes it so very hard on itself when it gives up over 200 yards on explosive plays, and it needs to figure out a way to make an offense beat them, as opposed to beating themselves.
5) Time to reevaluate the specialists.
Ben Turk should feel relieved tonight. He was horrendous punting the ball, managing only a long of 38 yards and averaged a shade under 32 yards a punt. That's a bad day for a high schooler, let alone a guy you burned a redshirt year on. I love the fact that Turk can bench press 400+ pounds, but if your best punts are low line drives that only end up going 35 yards, maybe it's time to put the barbells down and start kicking more footballs. Likewise, the story of dorm football player turned Irish kickoff man David Ruffer is a nice one, but if Notre Dame is going to rely on a kicker that can only put it onto the opponents 10 yard-line off the tee, then they're in trouble. Way too often today the field was flipped in Boston College's favor, and it's a big reason why BC nearly won a football game where they lost the turnover battle 5-0. It's time to see if Eric Maust has anything left in his leg, and to see if placekicker Nick Tausch or Brandon Walker can do better on kickoffs.

I've been saying for weeks that Golden Tate is Heisman material. I couldn't agree more!
Glad to exorcise those BC demons! The end of game nailbiters that we have won this season will be great experience in a tough New Years' Bowl game!
keith, is it just me or did cw shut down our offense and momentum with 6:40 left in the 4th qtr. previously we had just taken the lead and held bc to a three and out. i guess charlie felt he could take 2min a series off the clock and see if bc could score with 3 more possesions.
boy, as much maligned as our defense is, they seem to come up with big stops and plays. i wish that i could say something positive about charlie weiss and his coaching staff
can someone explain to me how holding can be called when a defender 5'11" is swallowed up inside the stomach of a 6'5" offensive tackle as was the case on the fake fg?
I am glad the Irish won...even though I think Magnum PI is doing a good job after leaving Hawaii for coaching
BC and ND is truly a love/hate deal
Every team's fans should be happy after a victory (Alabama). That being said, some things about this team drive you crazy. 1. As we very rarely get quick pressure from it, why does this team continue to blitz so often? 2. As we very rarely get pressure from it, why does this team continue to blitz so often? 3. As we vvery rarely get pressure from it, why does this team continue to blitz so often? etc. etc. This isn't player inconsistantcy, it's stubborness or stupidity or insanity!
This was a big game...Washington State is the weakest team ahead...I looked at the schedule earlier in the year and figured it would be easy after BC...man I was wrong.Stanford handled Washinton easily and had a nice win on Saturday.UConn is strong.Navy used to be our easy win..no longer true, they are good year in and year out and have closed the gap with ND despite the size/talent differences(maybe because of superior coaching?)...right now, I think Pitt is just flat out better than us(still can't figure out how they lost to NC St.)...winning out will be tough, but not impossible if ND keeps getting better.
Arnold,
You don't think this team is good??? You need to correct yourself by stating in your first point that GREAT teams find a way to win games like this...I believe that's the cliche. Hello...
Trust me, this Irish team is good...Not great, however. Not yet anyway.
Second, I like the changes the Irish made in the secondary by putting Brown and Slaughter in there. If only the game was shortened and played in the final minutes...That seems to be the solution for this team to play well on D...GO IREESSH!
playing not to lose
Keith - Wondering why Shaq Evans doesn't seem to be on the field at all. And how did Roby Toma pass him on the depth chart? All of a sudden, this kid who came to ND because Te'o did, and would not have been offered a scholarship otherwise, is ahead of a WR that USC wanted? Would someone please explain? I haven't read anything about Evans' progress (or lack thereof) in the Tribs, NBC, etc. Is he having some of the same growing pains that Tate did as a freshman? I was pleased with Kamara's play on Saturday, but it seems like we are suddenly thin (with Floyd out) at WR when we were supposed to have a surplus of great options for Jimmy.
I know a win is a win but its getting old saying that every week when the teams we play besides USC we should have beat by 2 TD's or more, and I'm tired of making average or below QB's look like all americans and as much as I like Coach Weis I don't see this school being better than 8-4 9-3 no matter how much talent he gets.If he loses 1 or 2 more games they should tell him to take one of those NFL jobs that call him every year and ND should call Brian Kelly up and say how would you like to be are coach.
I was just thinking....This team could be 7-0 right now. But one thing, I believe, this team has done for me is put the "Fighting" back into "Irish".
Where is Shaq Evans ???????
I think the enormous yards passing given up by the D starts at the D-line. These QB's are having all day to find receivers because there is no pass rush of significance. This in turn goes back to not being able to recruit top flight D linemen such as Bama & Fla. do. The secondary would be much better if they got some help from the front seven.
IMO the lack of love between these two teams goes back to 1992. ND was entertaining BC at ND and in the third quarter ND was leading something like 37-0. They went back for a punt and it was a fake punt and the ND punter, Henrich (sp?) ran for another ND first down. The camera showed him yukking it up on the sideline with his teammates after the play and then it showed the BC players watching this. It's called RUBBING THEIR NOSE IN IT, aka poor sportsmanship to the MAX, and the FIRST payback - of many - came the next year - 1993 - in the game after the Florida State game.
(During that game in 1993 the sportscaster Chris Collingsworth was the one to point out what I said above.)
Prior to that, IMO, BC was not in the same league as ND, but every time since then the two have played it has either been a nail-biter like yesterday or BC has just dominated, like last year.
This ND team has talent and they have plenty of fight, but they have no swagger.
p.s. - after the game there was a brief snippet showing Clausen talking to someone from BC and there seemed to be a difference of opinion - the BC guy seemed to say something that ticked Clausen off, and Clausen just turned his back and walked away. It was an interesting thing to watch - does anyone know what was said? It's not a game-breaker but it would be interesting to know what was said.
The two picks at the end of the game and McCarthy;s pick against uSC was the result of pressure from the 'D' on the QB.
Terry, there's an article on that on ESPNs website-ESPNBOSTON, specifically.
Basically, Gunnel, the WR for BC who torched us, was upset @ what JClausen did @ the beginning of the game. Apparently he talked trash to one of the BC defenders...
After the game, JC tried to congratulate Gunnel for his performance, but he refused to accept it cuz he was still upset. That's it.
This team is giving up huge chuncks of yardage in the pass game. To point out interceptions in games(especially USC) to justify the constant blitzes, is to overlook the fact that the opposing teams are exceeding their season pass averages against ND. If these yardage figures were not backed up by high scores, I might concede my point. These teams on most occasions are picking up the blitzes, and finding open recievers. I think you meant McCarthy's int. vs. Mich St. You're right ND blitzed one on that play. On the play before though they blitzed 2 and the MSU Qb missed a wide open reciever in the endzone. In preseason the prediction was that ND would be going up agaist many inexperienced Qbs, you'd have to say we've sure made them look good. I stand by my point.
Are you kidding me? Notre Dame will NEVER, EVER win another National Championship. THe schedule they play is like AAAA high school. I dont understand why they have their own section on MSNBC??? Is it a catholic thing? Notre Dame couldnt beat a real team from the Sec, just like it cant beat the only good team they ever play, USC. Please shut up about Heismans too. Clausen???? Please.
YO SAD BRAD WHATS WITH THE CATHOLIC CRACK ? ARE YOU STILL PISSED OFF ABOUT BEING PICKED AFTER THE GIRL!!GET OVER YOUR ISSUES YOU CATHOLIC BASHING WEENIE !!!!!!
keith,
1. it would appear that you also were struggling if, to give just one example of the dishonet officiating in favor of boston college that occured throughout the game, you were notre dame's robert blanton and you got held and mugged on bc's 1st td pass play by a boston college player, with the all acc field officials not calling the required 15 yard penalty and giving boston college a td that boston college certainly did not earn.
2. there are a few other key examples listed below which certainly involved only the dishonest acc game officials, not anyone associated with boston college or the big east tech review crew, who got every single item which was within their limited jurisdiction correct, reversing the acc officials on golden tate's 1st td catch and on the interception of jimmy clausen caught on a bounce by a boston college player, but ruled an interception by the acc field officials.
3. charlie and his staff and every notre dame student athlete have gone into the boston college game and every other game this season and in many other seasons knowing that they have to defeat the opponent on the field and dishonest officials.
4. there are many millions of dollars involved in the current corrupt systems at the conference and ncaa levels, along with an obvious intent to force notre dame, the nation's last independent football program which is a real threat to the current dishonest systems into an ivy league type system or into some corrupt conference.
5. although i am an irish catholic and many other members of our group of attorneys are also members of the catholic church, a significant percentage of the members of our group are of jewish, mormon, or other ethnic and religious backgrounds.
6. we each are well aware of the dishonest systems which our ancestors faced and overcame, both in their countries of origin and in the united states, where they all faced systems which did not hesitate to put up public signs stating "jobs available, but no koons, kikes, or cathloics need apply".
7. while the religious and ethnic lines have blurred, with some members of those oppressed religious and ethnic groups, including irish catholics, having actually joined up with the bad guys, dishonest systems will always show up in any area of human endeavor in which they are allowed to function behind closed doors.
8. until we went into the civil courts to get the judgments and settlements necessary to expose and fix the systems and change the balance of power to make it extremely unlikely that anything like that could ever occur again, we had certain members of the clergy and lay members of the catholic church operating a system which covered up numerous acts of sexual abuse by members of our own clergy and taking the position that nothing was wrong and that they were entitled to operate behind closed doors, a position which infuriated many of my own relatives and close friends who are catholio priests and nuns, but who, because of rules within the catholic church, very much like the college football and sports sportsmanship conduct rules, kept them from saying or doing anything about what was going on.
9. fortunately, those problems within the catholic church have been largely corrected, with control of large segments of the finances of the catholic church having been shifted away from the clergy and into the hands of lay members, such as the trustees who currently own and control the finances of notre dame, with great asists from fathers hesbugh and joyce who saw those problems coming and acted many years ago.
10.plugging the dishonet officiating factor into the mix, this notre dame team is undefeated and won the games they have won by much larger margins than the paper records currently show and making the performances and courage and tenacity of charlie and his staff and every member of this 2009 team truly amazing.
11. if anyone goes to und.com now, he or she can watch the entire postgame show and see and hear the comments of jack nolan, and reggie and mirko on the dishonest officiating at the boston college and notre dame's other games this season. both reggie and mirko, having been all americans in football at notre dame and played in the nfl, have been extremely reluctant to focus on the dishonest officiating factor, given the natural tendencies of anyone who plays football or any sport to blame dishonest officiating, instead of what appears to be the result of bad coaching or bad play by notre dame student athletes, to anyone who has not read the officting rules very carefully and hired the experts to break down every game film going back to the 2005 season, and not just of games involving notre dame, and gathered the other evidence necessary to identify every person and entity involved in the current corrupt systems of officiating and rules enforcement at the conference and ncaa levels, as we have.
12. anyone who takes the time to watch and listen will be amazed at how much reggie and mirko have to say about dishonest officiating at the boston college and at every other notre dame games and how the entire system must be changed.
13. quite frankly, we were surprised that reggie and mirko came out and said what they did in the postgame show at und.com since neither of them, like keith, has yet to take up our invitation to look at our evidence, including the game film breakdowns isolating the individual acts of dishonet officiating, along with patterns of calls and non calls, and speak with our expert witnesses, quite a few of whom are former conference football officials, who personnally observed the dishonest officiating and. after refusing to cooperate or keep quiet, found themselves terminated as officials. we have a few from every single conference.
14. additional examples of dishonest officting by the all acccrew at the notre dame/boston college game include, but are no means limited, to the folloowing few key examples.
15. there was no basis in the rules or on the field for that holding call against notre dame which robbed notre dame of that td on the fake field goal td or for the penalty that followed, the intention of which was to put notre dame out of field goal range. 16.fortunately, notre dame did make the field goal and the acc officials only suceeded in robbing notre dame of only 4 points on that play.
17. however, this acc crew did rob notre dame of 7 points on that robert hughes td run. no, hughes did not get the ball across the goal line. however, the only think that prevented hughes from getting in was a helmet to helmet hit on hughes by a boston college defender which required a 15 yard penalty and election from the game of the boston college player since helmet to helmet hits are very likely to cause severe concussions and other injuries.
18. in that case, the penalty was half the distance to the goal line and another shot at the td, which notre dame obviously would have made.
19. since notre dame's pass defense knew that they were going to get called for phony defensive pass interference penalties if they got too close to any bc receiver, they had to play loose and not nearly up to their abilities or what the rules permit if honestly enforced, in addition to being mugged consistently by boston college defenders, thus creating the illusion that notre dame's defense was giving up some big pass plays.
20.anyone who wants to watch the entire game replay of the notre dame/boston college game can do so right here at nd central, courtesy of keith and his staff.
22. anyone who wants to see another recent example of a game in which dishonest acc game officials and an acc tech review crew can watch a replay of he 10/22/2009 what appears to very a very close win by florida state over north carolina, until you adjust the score for the numerous dishonest acts of officiating in favor of north carolina which, as in the notre dame/boston college game, failed to deliver a win to north carlina.
23. for other recent examples of dishonest officiating which determined the outcomes of games, try the iowa/ michigan state game, which currently is listed as an iowa win until you see the reversed interception call by the big 10 officials which, if not reversed, would have been a loss for undefeated iowa, which is now the big 10's last realistic shot at getting a big 10 team into the bcs national championship game, the alabama/tennessee game which appears to be a 2 point win alabama until you examine the failure of the all sec officiating crews to call obvious penalties on alabama players on 2 blocked field goal tries by tennessee, thereby preserving the sec's chances of getting one team into the bcs national championship and a second into another bcs bowl.
24. for other examples of recent games determined by sometimes sophisticated dishonest officiating, try the phony win by oregon over washington by all pac 10 crews, setting up a bidding war for the usc/oregon game at oregon, which usc lost a few years ago and the all big east officiating crews at the pitt/south florida state game.
25. the games appear to be big blowout wins by oregon and pitt until you have an expert examine the officiating patterns in the game films and find out what really happened. both washington and south florida were victims of so many dishonest acts of officiating at the beginnings of those games that those teams, unlike notre dame, gave up and threw in the towels.
26. we have delivered the appropriate warnings and are still getting feedback from some individuals the conference and ncaas levels who want to work out setllements out of court.
27. with respect to certain individuals at the top of the current crooked systems, including dave parry( big 10 and ncaa level college football officiating llc), sec commisioner mike slive, big 10 commissioner jim delany, the pac 10's dave cutaia( but not new pac 10 commssioner larry scott) we already have their responses in the form of interviews given to 3 ap reporters(yes, we gave the tips to the reporters) whose article appeared at page 11c of the 10/23/2009 usa today and which anyone can find online at the usa today under the title"Oficials taking hits over recent misses" which were the standard there is nothing wrong, without any real disclosures.
28. do we think that the notre dame/washington game is an easy game? hell no. it is a perfect opportunity for dave cutaia and jim muldoon and one of their crooked pac 10 field officiating crew to deliver a crippling loss to notre dame or severe injuries to key notre dame student athletes.
29. where do we go from here? we start having our process servers serve lawsuits on cutaia and muldoon of the pac 10 conference and every member of their crooked officiating crews and asisting pac 10 commissioner larry scott in terminating them all for cause and hiring honest replacements.
30. since we have plenty of fine attorneys all over the us and plenty of evidence at the conference and ncaa levels, others will do the same with every other conference, exccpet for the big east, which did provide an honest tech review crew for the notre dame/boston college game, in which case, we will insist on immediate meetings in person, along with documents on every big east official and assurances in writing.
31. after all, notre dame has coming up games with pitt at pitt and with uconn at notre dame with big east game and tech review crews and we do have the game film of the pitt.south florida game and the names of those officials.
32. if the guys at the big east do not meet with us immediately, we will proceed with the discovery actions immediately.
GO IRISH!!!
robertg: The truth is out there.
This is just another SEC idiot that's a fan of the teams that get their required frontala lobotomy's before they start their freshmanan year. Ever hear one of these morons try to give a post game interview? Pathetic. Having said that, I live in Alabamastan and am constantly surrounded by the side show that pervades the Crimson Tide. No doubt they have a great defense, however, with no offense they have no chance to win another NC. If you ask them it will be #15, or some such idiocy. Anyway, if we had their defense we'd definately one of the big boys on the block and until we get a defense like Alabamastans then we really have not realistic shot at a NC, or a BCS game for that matter. I think we're probably gonna drop at least one more game this year because of the inability to cover the pass. If all we have to deal with is teams that run then I'd say we have a better than even chance to run it out. If the secondary hasn't gotten if figured out by now, I don't believe they will. GO IRISH!!!!!!!
I'll have my people contact your people. (If we can find them)
I think you have it right very good I agree all the way. Hope the ND coachs read this.
keith,
1. yes, the truth is out there and some coaches in the conference are ignoring the threats from the conferences under the so called sportmanship conduct rules and publicly outing game officials and tech reviewers for dishonest acts of officiating which did alter the outcomes of games this past week.
2.according to our reliable sources, including press releases, mississippi state coach dan mullen publicly demanded( article by ap reporter chris talbott currently posted at the college sports section of yahoo sports) that sec commissioner mike slive fire sec tech reviewer dan dembinski after dembowsi failed to overturn an obvious florida fumble that was ruled a florida td by the sec game officials, thereby allowing florida to escape its second straight loss, last week's being to coach bobby petrino's arkansas team.
3. the sec commissioner mike slive did suspend the entire sec crew that officiated the florida/arkansas officiating crew for an unspecified period of time(the old slap on the wrists trick), but also publicly admonished coach petrino for speaking out publicly about officiating misconduct(meaning basically, if you do this again we will hit you with a huge fine and/or have you banned from college sports) via the new ncaa level vehicle called college football officiating llc(this outfit has a website of the same name with lots of great information), which is run by long term con artist dave parry, formerly of the big 10 conference, and representives from each of the big 6 conferences.
4. we are also informed that coach mike riley of oregon state intends to complain publicly about dishonest pac 10 officiating at the oregon state/usc game which allowed usc to escape its second straight loss. riley has been around the pac 10 long enough to know that cutaia and muldoon have been con artist for many years and the riley should direct his complaints to new pac 10 commissioner larry scott. coach riley is a distant cousin of myself and of notre dame's own ruth riley, although none of us have met or spoken to one another yet.
5. michigan state coach mark dantonio is very likely to complain publicly about the dishonest officiating at the michigan state/iowa game which stole a win over iowa. coach dantonio has powerful allies in the big 10 conference, including joe paterno of penn state, who graduated from the same jesuit high school in brooklyn that i did 20 years later and jim tressel of ohio state and other big 10 coaches, not incliuding rodriguez of michigan who is an active parrticipant in the big 10 dishonest officiating scam, as were his predecessors at michigan. the big 10 conference is rotten to the core with jim delany at the top, bill carollo as the cordinator of football officiating and still calling the shots at the big 10 and nationwide now, dave parry, the 1st national coordinator of college football officiating at the ncaa level college football officiating llc.
6. we are informed that charlie and his staff and notre dame's student athletes are aware of our activities. however, charlie has already been admonished by parry several times and, with notre dame being an independent, there is really nothing that charlie and his staff and notre dame's studen t athletes can do other than to prepare every weak to defeat each opponent and crews of dishonest officials. after all, charlie and his staff and notre dame, along with navy, are the last real independents in college football and cannot really get involved in anything that we are doing, except to appear as witnesses at public jury trials involving these matters.
7. anyone who needs to contact us can simply send whatever they want to the main office of the associated press to the attention of chris talbott ref robertg. after all, we provided a lot of help to the ap, which was a co plaintiff in that big win over the ncaa in the 10/15/2009 case that compelled the ncaa, for the first time ever in any matter, to disclose to the public all documents and transcipts and other records relating to the ncaa inmvestigation of academic fraud at the florida state athletic department(coach bobby bowden self reported the violations to the ncaa as soon as he found out about them and florida state volutarily cooperated in the ncaa investigation, but refused nto make any payoffs to certain people related to the ncaa).
8. unlike usc which has played coverup and made payoffs, florida state was cstripped of every win and every tile in every sport in which florida state competes, along with other sanctions.
9. bobby bowden has also been very public in his outing of dishonest acc officials at last week's failed attempt by all acc game and tech officials to steal a win for north carolina over florida state.
10. as in the case of joe paterno of penn state, bobby bowden has always been an honest man and not afraid of any threats.
11. we are also infromed that south florida's coach is going to publicly complain about the dishonest big east officials who organized what appeared to be a blowout win by pitt over souyth florida.
GO IRISH!!!

I see this win as nothing but that, a win. We played a lot better against USC ,but having said that, the trait that we don't give up is one of the biggest pluses this year that we have and is essential in building a Championship team. WE are going to have to play a lot better against Pitt and Stanford ( that will be a tough one against Toby Gerhart). But let's not look ahead, Washington State is not going to be a push over, nobody is. So let's go into San Antonio and kick butt.
GO IRISH!!!
I just noticed the ND is back in the top 25. Again, why? Year after year except for a few very tough teams, and this year is no different, the rest of the schedule is at best weak teams. Some years cupcake city. The voters have got to forget the ND of old; reputations have to fade and live in today. Their wins are against below average teams, and a few teams had the same kind of schedule they did. Their refusal to play a lot of good teams on a home on home schedule, makes good teams walk away. If ND wants to be ranked for what they are and not what they were 15 yrs ago, then the AD has to fix the schedule. Why should ND play 7 home games yr after yr, or at best a neutral site and six home games and then expect to be recognized. Drop the service academies, play more SEC, ACC, and Big Ten schools and win and then maybe you will finally deserve to be ranked much less play in a BCS bowl.
i know CW makes some mistakes game in and game out, but you can't have it both ways.
he was crucified when he threw passes against UofM and did not run to burn time and punt it away. against BC he runs to make them burn their last time outs and eat clock and now you are saying he went conservative and almost cost ND the game.
it's a no win for CW, run and not convert and he went conservative pass and throw incompletes and he isn't killing the clock.
5-2 no quit in this team and, at times, the pass defense looked respectable. no excuse for giving up 30 on 4th and 17 but they made enough plays to win.
Tiredagain is why you don't know that CBS, which has us ranked 29th, has our strength of schedule at 25. Happens to be more difficult than Alabama (27), Texas (35), USC, LSU, Penn St, Okl St., Ohio St, WV, South Carolina, and a host of others. Maybe those SEC teams should cut out their three yearly scrimmages against community colleges. The service academy that we traditionally play almost beat OSU, just beat Wake, and very likely will win 10 games. Every team but Nevada and Navy are from BCS conferences and those two are no slouches. We've beaten a team that beat USC, that beat Ohio State, and that got robbed from beating Iowa. We're beating teams with talent and our schedule strength is higher than most top 25 ranked teams according to CBS.

Ah, you sound like another "GAAYTOR!" fan again. Come on Notre Dame! Play a stronger schedule. Play McNeese State, Charleston school of the blind, and University of NW Georgia State like we do in our non-conference schedule! And your idea that Notre Dame refuses to play great teams on a home on home schedule is completely ridiculous. All the major conferences are trying to play 6-7 home games a year. I can tell you one thing, Navy would beat alot if not all of the teams that these other major schools play on their non-conference schedule. Why, bc they play patsies. I can't remember a time in the last 100 years where Notre Dame played an opponent from div. 1-AA. Ask that question to the "GGGAAYYTORS", LSU, Buckeyes, etc. Kapeesh?
I will say it, THIS TEAM IS JUST NOT VERY GOOD! It has come down to not wanting a bcs game because there is not a bcs qualified team WE CAN BEAT! Please God let it be the gator bowl so we can maybe win another bowl game! Pitt Uconn Stanford are far from easy wins folks. Is it me or does watching ND games feel like a slow death!! WE NEED A REAL COACH!!!!! Mike Floyd is the only WR we can go deep downfield with? WTF!!!!
BTW I am already sick of hearing how great JC is he is one arrogant move away from having his head ripped off. He constantly gets in defenders faces opens up his mouth and acts like anything but a leader. The problem here right now is that from day one it has been the CW and JC show and boy does that show. Why is it that Dayne Crist has bsrely thrown a GD pass he may very well wind up being our QB going forward and he has almost no experience!!! I will bet however once we are rid of another clausen bust DC will lead us to much more convincing W~!!!!
Golden Tate should be in Heismann consideration, oh yes!!! ANd the ND defense should be in consideration for a total overhaul, including its coach.
it is discouraging that USC is the worst they have been in many years and ND still lost. They will only get better. The fact that many of the games have been so close, but the opposition has been led by freshmen QB's is scary...especially for the future...the BC game...USC...Mich... The mystery of "who's playing today?" at ND is mindboggling considering they have such a powerful balanced offense shows that cw cannot commit to anyone, so what team members are ever going to buy into that?...ramble...ramble...ramble...
during pregame, Clausen was chirping to the BC players "Get your b!tch asse$ off my field" and gave one of the receiver a shove.
that is why Gunnell did not accept Clausen's phony congratulations at the end of the game.
Shaq evans has not been playing b/c he had the flu USC week and was still recovering BC. Also weis said in his press conference that evans is more of an outside reciever rather than an inside reciever so he played goodman and toma in the slot, rather than put evans in a postion he was unfamiliar with being in the slot. look for him to get more playing time against Washington St.
Keith, you have built here a labor of love. Keep it up for our lady!
I wish ND would play Florida. It would be worse than the beating Florida gives Ohio State. You guys DONT PLAY ANYBODY WORTH A CRAP!!!!
