As Jimmy Clausen's pass hit the well-clipped end zone grass, the last scene of this movie was what Irish and Trojan fans have come to expect. Yet the way we got there... that's where the story got interesting.
In the end, there are no moral victories, but the Irish mounted a furious comeback and had a chance to tie the game with the ball on Southern Cal's four yard-line on the game's final play. Duval Kamara slipped on his quick out, there were no heroics, and USC players and coaches rushed the field for the second time in the evening.
Final score: USC 34, Notre Dame 27.
Here's what we learned:
1) There is fight in the Fighting Irish.
With 13 minutes left in the game, the Irish were down 20 points, and it had looked like all the talk of Notre Dame being "back" was once again bluster. Yet Notre Dame answered the bell and Jimmy Clausen and the offense came alive. The Irish started scoring points, and all of a sudden things got interesting.
"Anyone who doesn't realize the fight that's in the Fighting Irish is missing the boat," Charlie Weis said after the game. "If you haven't watched the last five games, I mean, it's every week the same thing."
While many will focus on the final score, you've got to think that a game like this isn't as devastating as losing by 20, or having victory snatched away like it was in 2005. The Irish did a funny thing in the fourth quarter -- they began to play like there was nothing to lose. The defense buckled down, getting a key turnover and some much-needed pressure on freshman Matt Barkley, and the offense scored two touchdowns against the mighty Trojan defense, even the dormant crowd awakened, becoming a much needed 12th man for the Irish defense. A loss is a loss, but you could see the faces in the press box slowly come around and begrudgingly appreciate this gritty Notre Dame team.
2) Recruits got what they wanted.
With 70 of the nation's premiere high school football players in attendance, Notre Dame gave their best sales pitch. The crisp fall air and meticulous campus certainly passed the eyeball test and the game on the field wasn't too shabby either.
Weis' weekend is far from over, he'll spend much of tomorrow meeting with recruits and seeing which of them will join forces and help Notre Dame get over this final hurdle. After watching tonight, you don't need to think too hard to figure out what angle Weis will play.
Notre Dame was on fine display this crisp autumn Saturday, and while the results on the scoreboard might show the Irish losing, we'll find out soon whether the recruiting war was won or lost.
3) You live and die with the blitz.
Jon Tenuta's defense rolled the dice often today, and one too many times they came up with snake eyes. The Trojans gashed the ND passing defense, with the Irish unable to get enough pressure on freshman Matt Barkley. Too often, Notre Dame's blitzes played right into the hands of the Trojan offense. Damian Williams' 41-yard touchdown and the prolific day of Anthony McCoy was the direct result of failed pressure. The explosive plays that Notre Dame gave up were just too much to overcome. I think the spotlight that has long been on head coach Charlie Weis just shifted to defensive playcaller Jon Tenuta.
4) Let's slow down on the coronation of Matt Barkley.
Barkley's numbers today were terrific -- 19 of 29 for 380 yards and 2 TDs -- but let me be perfectly frank. Those weren't difficult throws. USC coach Pete Carroll was effusive in his praise for the freshman, lending a hand to all the media types who will revel in the freshman's poise and moxie under pressure. But talking with a few writers who watch a lot of college football, we couldn't think of one throw that made you just say "wow." This is far from sour grapes, and the sky most certainly is the limit for a freshman quarterback who walked into both Ohio State and Notre Dame and came out victorious, but there were open receivers all over the field for the Trojans, and Barkley just needed to steer the Ferrari. I'm sure Barkley will be the next first round quarterback out of Troy, but let's all pump the brakes before we anoint him.
5) The Irish are almost there.
The player probably in the most pain tonight is one that never saw the field. It's terrible to play the "what could've been" game, but wandering the sidelines this afternoon before the game, it looked like Michael Floyd would've given his left collarbone to play in this game. Floyd warmed up like a player that was ready to go to battle, wandered the sidelines with his receiving gloves on and helmet strapped up for most of the first half. And while Notre Dame managed to put up 27 points on the vaunted Trojan defense, you can only imagine what this offense would have looked like with Floyd opposite Golden Tate, who again was an absolute monster today.
While there were some eerie similarities between this game and the 2005 edition, there is also a decidedly different feel to this loss. Part of me thinks it's almost more important that the Irish came back from 20 down than them actually winning the game. While the win would've been the "signature win" that everyone seems to be clamoring for, we learned today with certainty that this team fights for Charlie Weis. There may be some fatal flaws in this squad, and it may be taking much longer than people want, but the Irish are almost there.

Another ND loss and there is more to come. I'm not sure if it is that ND has "fight" or USC got lazy. There's no way ND is a BCS team. This is just NBC hyping ND because of their ridiculous TV contract. Weiss has yet to win a big game and I doubt he will anytime soon.
I'm sorry, but the defense completely let ND down today. Tenuta is not the right man to run this defense...PERIOD!!! The offense is real and Charlie only made, what in my opinion, was a stupid call and that was going for it on 4 down. Take the 3 points. I was proud of the comeback, but it still isn't enough to take away the sting of watching that smug grin of Pete Carroll's and the gross sportsmanship of the SC players.
When colleges around the nation put more emphasis on what is best for their players and less on what is best for their programs will Notre Dame be able to compete year in and year out. You see if you are not able to compete in the classroom at Notre Dame, you will not compete on their football team. The football players at Notre Dame will graduate and have something to show for their years of hard work and self-sacrifice. Can the same be said about the top ten teams in the nation?
I was proud of the Irish today because they have guts and courage and they too should be proud of what they are and will someday become.
Keith, you're a homer. Be objective. That Barkley kid sometimes completed passes with guys in his face. But of course you were looking at the game through green colored glasses.
As for the fight in the irish. A football game is a fight. The objective is to WIN. They didn't. And to think you guys said this was the best time to get USC.
You are a homer domer!
The Irish is truely almost there. People seem to forget when Charlie first came from New England, he did not do a lot of recruiting thsat year because the Pats went to the Super Bowl. I think (not sure of the number) he had only 15 blue chip recruits that year. It showed 2 yrs ago when Ty's team graduated, and he started almost all fresh men and sophomres who are all junior and seniors now. There is depth at key positions now, and this team just proved they can stand up to and play anyone in the nation. Charlie will get there. Then we will all be unveiling a statue of him made from all the stones we threw at him.
I loved this football game. Notre Dame did not quit and they did not roll over when USC got up by 20 points. Instead they worked even harder, blocked even better and ran even faster than they had been doing for the previous 3 quarters. While the Irish did loose the ballgame, they won their fans over. I don't care if Notre Dame looses every game, just as long as they don't quit. I only get to see N.D. play in person 1 time a year, and win or loose, I count myself lucky to be able to be a supporter of a team that does not quit. I predict that even with this loss, that the Irish go up in the polls. They are still #1 in my eyes and I wore my Notre Dame sweatshirt with pride once more today. I can't wait for next Saturday!!
And yet, Clausen lost another game to USC, right? Next year, even if Clausen stays, he loses 4 starting O-line guys to graduation. No Heisman this year, and none next year if he stays.
Close but not close enough.
Barkley on the other hand, has won on the road at the Shoe, in Berkeley, and now in South Bend.
Winning matters.
Charlie is 0-5 v. USC. He does not have a signature win. He recruits talent then coaches like he does not the trust those same players to perform on the field. The latest example being his bad decision to go for it on fourth down during today's game when his kicker has been nails this season.
The biggest handicapp the program has at this point is its head coach. Five years is long enough to make a fair evaulation of his coaching skills. His failure to produce results over his tenure mandates his dismissal. His time has past, give the kids a coach who is worthy of the heart and effort they showed today. Do the right thing ND and send Charlie on his way. ND92
I had the game predicted 34-13 USC and was shocked to see Notre Dame come back. USC's o-line dominated in pass protection and it showed with Barkley's stat line. He still made 2-3 really bad passes and only one of them was picked off. One throw threaded through triple coverage to one of his receivers was impressive as well as the lob to the tight end that went for 40-some yards. Other than that, I agree - you put any above average quarterback in with that offensive line and you get the same result. And notre dame has a habit of making stars out of OK offensive players. ND needs D-line help - this is where they need their 2 playmakers then maybe a Tenuta defense will make a difference - until then they're an offensive coordinator's dream. The offense is the real deal - Clausen, Floyd, Tate, and Rudolph will all play in the NFL - if they all come back, notre dame should be back in the top 10 - but for how long??
All this game showed was an officiating crew that called numerous penalties against SC in an attempt to either show their impartiality or they were bought and paid for by ND and NBC.
An SC player makes a sack and receives a 15 yard penalty for flexing his muscles. An ND player does the exact same thing with no penalty called.
And the last second replay reminded me of the Russian olympic basketball team that received extra time and fouls against the US so they could win the game. Replaying the last second of the game was the single most corrupt event in NCAA sports - and ND still couldn't score.
I give credit to ND because I think they are a much improved team, but the officiating tainted their efforts and confirmed that they are not quite there. They are ranked #25 and that's about right.
Please send the Irish to a BCS Bowl game!
Watching ND get the heck beat out of them in a Bowl they have no business in is becoming a Holiday tradition. They must send free copies of Knute Rockne, All American to the bowl committees to keep getting selected.
Living on long past glories may work in SB, but an NCAA record for consecutive bowl losses (9) and lopsided losing record vs winning teams in the Weis era speak for themselves.
Just send them to Hawaii......they play well there....maybe the BCS can move a game there
B.S. The replay clearly showed 1 second on the clock after the pass was bouncing on the ground. Absolutely appropriate that ND got one more chance, and hats off to SC for coming back onto the field and stopping them. The really close call at the end was the incomplete call in the end zone. The call could have gone either way, and if the ref had ruled possession and a TD, replay would not have reversed it. My Huskies played both in very close games, lost one late, won one late. They are both exciting teams to watch.
I don't understand why Duval Kamara was the go to guy with the game on the line. I played wire receiver about as well as he, and in reflection I was a poor route runner, so is he. He's a junior and I suspect a superb athlete but he's two dimensional. If he had made his cut, the ball would have hit him in the numbers and we'd have gone to overtime.
AS for the USC apologists on this thread, I played with two guys in JC who went there and made All-American. Neither of them could read or write a complete sentence. Routing for SC is like saying your a member of Raider Nation.
Five things east coast journalists should have learned by now:
1. Notre Dame has no more fight in it than any other self-respecting team.
Nothing special about the fight in the Fighting Irish. Fight all you want, winning is what counts. With SC's childish defense committing that number of penalties, either real or imagined, with 13 minutes to go, any decent team should believe it could win. That said, SC's had plenty of fight and its defense had just a little more. In the end, it was Clausen who couldn't finish the fight.
2. The recruits did not got what they wanted.
They got first hand experience being a part of 70,000 chilled Notre Dame fans - lose. If the recruits are good enough, they will play for SC next year and beat Notre Dame again in front of 90,000 sun tanned fans at the Coliseum. Both Matt Barkley and Monti T'eo played in high school last year and both started today. I bet many wanted to ask T'eo why he left the warm weather to endure this.
3. Notre Dame died blitzing, died on quarterback sneaks, and died rushing, and died passing.
SC's offensive line picked up the five- or six-man rush most of the game, offering Barkley adequate time in the pocket for a 65% 380-yard throwing day. Even with ND's attempt to disrupt SC's defense witht the wildcat, ND totaled 82 yards rushing. Why Armando Allen wasn't in the backfield for any of the last four plays shows how overconfident the coaching staff is of Clausen's skills. ND scored its first touchdown with Clausen watching from the side lines most of the series. Between SC's acts of immaturity and inconsistent officiating, the score could easily have been 41-10.
4. The coronation of Barkley has only just started.
What would you call a career high of 380 yards passing? Many of his passes were spot on while sticking it out in the pocket. In the first half he had three straight completions for 7 points. In the second half, he was 8 for 9 for 14 points. Barkley's pass to Anthony McCoy was flawless and a momentum changer. Barkley had almost as many yards passing in the second half as Clausen had all game - in 43 attempts. This was Barkley's second signature game. Barkley is 4-0 when has started.
5. The Irish are done.
This was their year to beat the Trojans. You can say good-bye to the ND offensive line at the end of the year. Where does that leave Clausen and Weis next year? Weis has been noted for making a lot of promises to recruits and alumni for the past four years. How's Monti T'eo feeling about now? Ready for his two-year Mormon mission while the new ND coaching staff settles in?
Keith...you say It's terrible to play the "what could've been" game...then what do you do? you go ahead and play the "what could've been game" with the absence of Michael Floyd.
shoulda coulda woulda...pretty weak. any team anywhere anytime can do the same on any saturday.
You said: Part of me thinks it's almost more important that the Irish came back from 20 down than them actually winning the game.
News flash---you better fire up the ol' calculator...you didn't come back from 20 points down...because that would have meant you scored...ummm..20 points! you came up a little short of 20.
Now you realize you didn't come back from 20 points down AND you actually didn't win the game too!
It's interesting how the mind of a homer works....on one hand you say..."The Irish are almost there", when it suits your purpose..on the other hand when you try to diminish the outstanding throwing display of Matt Barkley, you say: "there were open receivers all over the field for the Trojans, and Barkley just needed to steer the Ferrari".
So which is it?? are they almost there? or are they so bad that anybody could have completed those passes as you seem to intimate?
This column is as embarrassing as Weis trying to explain himself when he was going to the locker room at the half when he said it was good they were down by six!
I must say....you have learned to spin from the best!
Oh...and I soooo look forward to the purely objective...totally unbiased views of robertg and his take on the game, I am sure we will hear from him soon...that is unless he has imploded in his room.
You clearly wasted at least an hour of your life writing this. To me, that indicates that you either have no friends or are so deeply unhappy with your own life that you feel it is necessary to criticize young men who will always be more successful than you. It is funny to think of you writing in this in your cheetoh stained underwear, picking on jimmy clausen, a kid who, if he was drafted tommorrow morning, would still make more money than you could ever imagine seeing. I don't like notre dame, but you are human slime. Get a life.
Notre Dame should be proud of the fight. Those refs really have heart.
Charlie and his wonderful play calling...why did he stop using Hughes...timeouts left and only four yards...hasn't he proved himself...Gruden or Fulmer please
I feel as though kejji does not understand how to fully analyze a picture, as evident from his simple "you said" quotations. This is a problem with many writers who just take one comment and take it out of context & blow it up out of proportion.
First of all, the calculator reference was just a non-sensical rant. Obviously, Keith Arnold knows that ND did not win the game. Coming back from 20 down refers to that ND did not just roll over & die 20points down. In fact, they came back 13points from 20down. Unfortunately, that leaves a deficit of 7points which is short of a tie. No calculator needed. Also, no ill-constructed calculator argument needed.
Secondly, saying that the Irish are almost there & that people need to take caution before heralding Barkley are two separate points that do not have to be mutually exclusive. There is no "which is it?" Barkley had great numbers, but he was aided much by a stellar SC line & a ND defense that is not yet there. For SC's sake, I hope Barkley manages to keep his composure when his pocket more-often-that-not breaks down. Hopefully you will never have to experience this.
Someone else posted about Barkley winning at ND (current win), UCLA (now out of the top 25), & Ohio State (just lost to Boilermakers). SC better start rooting for its former foes or else its schedule is starting to look a bit weak (sauce). That's not going to aid the argument come end of season for who's not going to be left out of the title game.
"The coronation of Barkley has only just started.
What would you call a career high of 380 yards passing?"
I'd call that par for the course. Every QB ND's defense has faced has had a career day. Why would Barkley be any different? Barkley had great stats, but I attribute most of those yards to ND's secondary being completely over-matched. How many passes did Barkley throw over 12 yards? 1? To a wide open TE out-running ND's crappy safeties?
Don't get me wrong, I think Barkley looked as good as any freshman I've seen at QB in a long time; he'll go on to have a great career, like all the other qb's from there, but it is a little early to anoint him as the greatest QB to ever live.
ND has a great offense, and I'm really excited to see them with Floyd back later this year, but until ND starts getting some big-time defensive recruits, they'll be just like Texas Tech. They'll outscore the crappy teams and lose badly to the Big Boys of FBS.
VT -- Thanks for responding to Kejji, I didn't have it in me today.
God Bless Notre Dame!! You guys played your heart out and in the end that is all we can ask!. Notre Dame is Back!! This is the return of a Dynasty! Great job guys!!
robertg won't be around. ND can't blame the refs for this one. Gave them all kinds of chances. Charley and his beloved Clausen lost this one.
robertg won't be around. ND can't blame the refs for this one. Gave them all kinds of chances. Charley and his beloved Clausen lost this one.
While Searl was spending his time Saturday night (post @ 2am Sunday) writing a lengthy 5-point comment to Arnold's article instead of maybe celebrating the game heart-to-heart with SC fans, he forgot about one thing, heart. It bewildered fans when Mormon Te'o from Hawaii chose Catholic ND over sunshine SC. It bewildered me even more when I found out that Te'o's recruitment game was the late loss to Syracuse when the students were throwing snowballs at halftime. Te'o experienced the Irish when they were down & saw something that made him want to join the fight. These are the stories & players that make Notre Dame special. There is a mystique at Notre Dame that make these events happen. No where else but Notre Dame. The fight in the Irish did not result in a win yesterday. But winning is not all that counts, heart matters as well. I cannot speak for Te'o but perhaps that is his mentality as well. Enjoy your current 8-game win streak. Try sharing it with people you know & then getting some sleep instead of spending time that night criticizing 20 year-olds with an electronic comment note. But before you say the Irish are done, remember the long 11-game stretch in the rivalry when ND had more fight, more heart, & more wins.
Yeah "Pay them off pete" will head back to the n.f.l. somewhere and win a super bowl. LOL,LOL,LOL
well now....that was a big steaming pile of befuddlement!
but thanks for trying..
Ditto, NDmd. An ELEVEN year loosing streak is just too embarassing to s.c. people!!!
Why was it befuddling? Because he didn't agree with your assessment that obviously was the only assessment worth having?
The only what-if is what if Kamara didn't slip. Jimmy put that ball in the precisely where it needed to be, exactly like the Rudolph catch against Purdue. Instead we are left with the most sour taste since the 2005 game, because it was a game we could have won. It was a different pair of cleats away from being Charlie's signature game, instead it becomes another heartbreaker and exercise in what-if's.
Why oh why didn't Chuck put the game in Rudolphs hands on a jump ball on the last play? =[
Look, no matter how many times we look back @ this game and wish this or that could have happened, things aren't going to change. We lost cuz of our D-fense, which has been the problem the whole year. Like Parcells says, u r what ur record is. It's time to move on and focus on the next game. The season isn't over yet so let's not get crazy over one game and talk about the same negative crap constantly. Keep your spirits up and BELIEVE that the D-fense WILL improve...GO IREESSH!
You and the rest of the idiots always come up with an excuse for Notre Dame and try to put other schools down. USC is a top 30 academic school now and their players graduate. Same way with UNC in basketball and they have a 86% graduation rate. Your graduation rate is bull and just so you know I graduated from a IVY league school and you are not an IVY school and stop the bs.
Your team is not back and if USC continued to play defense vs. prevent defense, they would of won this easily. We will see next year, what excuses you have when they beat ND in Calif.
I'm a very important person! I went to an Ivy League school! Somebody pay attention to me!
Again the east coast viewers and journalists haven't learned anything.
1. 2am on the east coast is - 11pm (the previous day) on the west coast. Many west coast games were just finishing while you were asleep. Reminder, if you are from the east cost and make a trip west of the Mississippi (like ND will next year) you have to set your watch back (earlier) depending on the time difference as the Earth spins towards the west.
2. Football is played by 20-year-olds at USC as well, as evidenced by their childish behavior and poor discipline that nearly lost them the game. That should be the real story with Keith's story about this game.
3. ND did play hard, no doubt - as hard as Washington did against SC earlier this year. ND's fight had little to do with its loss. Again, not a real story as any top-tier team should fight to win.
The refs gave ND the Washington game and tried their best to do the same with USC. 8 in a row baby.
losers
Hats off to USC on their victory. Is USC that much better than ND, don't think so. ND lost by 7 points and 4 yards. Officiating--actually the best officiating I have seen in an ND game this year. Hats off to that PAC10 crew and Big East replay crew. The elite teams ND is trying to catch; FLA struggled with Arkansas, Texas beat a hobbled OU team by 3,(the only competition the Longhorns have faced to date, The Ohio State lost to a struggling Purdue team. ND has closed the gap on the so called "elite".
Keith, nice article. However, you didn't really mention where Weis stands after all this. I think the outcome was the worst of all possible worlds if you are a Weis detractor. His team lost but fought and stayed in the game. I like Charlie but I think he's had his chance to prove something and its likely time to move on but yesterday's outcome will still have a lot of people sitting on the fence about him. I think poor clock mgmt has been his signature while at ND. On that last series why throw the lob to Rudolph as your first play? That should have been the last play with only a second left. Time should not have been such a factor on that last drive. Also, he said he probably would've gone for 1 if they had scored at the end. When you're in your own house with that kind of momentum you have to have the cajones to win the game. The decision to go on 4th down rather than kick a FG was a coin flip. He said he was 3 or 4 yds beyond Tausch's range, not to mention that Tausch did miss one PAT already.
As for Clausen, I was really disappointed that JC could not have completed that last pass and gone into OT to win. A clutch performance in a signature game would have locked down the Heisman for him. Lastly, allow me to Sunday morning QB him a little bit. Why did he choose to throw to Duval on that last play? If he waited .3 seconds longer to throw, Rudolph was wide open over the top of that route. Kamara is an as yet unproven asset and remains as such. You got to go to Rudolph there. that was a costly mistake, but hopefully he'll avoid the Heisman jinx that apparently comes with that award.
Did I mention that Urban Meyer has a ridiculously low buyout on his contract. Despite what he says about not wanting to go to ND, he is probably at the max of what a public institution is willing to pay for a coach. Its time to move to the premiere coaching job of college football and make some real bucks.
In closing, its good to know that robertg is back on his meds.
ND's destruction is America's mandate!! You think Golden Boy Jimmy has got "Turf Toe" now, he'll be lucky to have ANY toes left by the end of the month!!!
National pimps BCS and NBC are doing everything they can to give their favorite hoochie-girl (commonly known as ND, lots of money and BCS bowls while the rest of the NCAA schools have to fight and scratch and scrape.
Next year they might get away with it, but THIS YEAR, Notre Dame will PAY!!!!!!
usc is a slightly better team than notre dame. they seem to have our number. the one poster mentioned "70,000 chilled notre dame fans", or "100,000 sun bathed fans". this part of his speech is his undoing. typical material attitude.
still love us "70,000 chilled characters" with heart and soul
I seem to remember a string of 13 in a row with the Irish beating Southern Cal. Ii don't think history will repeat itself.
well im glad to see so many of you are content and happy with the fact that your team only lost by 7 points.
Maybe next year you will improve...and you can be happy that you only lost by 3 points!
This east coast viewer did actually consider the possibility of Searl being a west coaster writing a comment Saturday pm in my post. See my original post. I actually do stay in/up to watch (when I can) some of the west coast games just because I love college football that much. There was no need to belittle with your "how the world turns" lesson.
Robert Hughs! Why didn't he get a shot at that end zone? And the "If I thought we would be in the position to win at the end of the game....and I'd take it" comment just means to me the coach was the one who didn't have the heart to win, because he didn't even believe they were going to win. That comment by Wise speaks volumes. It's time now to send this guy packing. I've lived in Southern California all my life until just recently, and I've seen a lot of SC/ND games at the Coliseum, and many a memorable ND victory. I was with a good friend in the SC student section the year they beat them 55 to 0. In the student section because my friend was an SC student, but the bad is beginning to outweigh the good.
keith,
1. we thank you and your staff for the online film coverage of the 2009 notre dame win over usc, another win stolen from notre dame by blatantly dishonest officiating, in the case of this game, by a dishonest pac 10 field crew consisting of head ref michael batlan, umpire al granado, linesman cappy anderson, line judge michael feldman, back judge david ambrose, field judge kevin kieser, side judge shane anderson, and scorer kevin barry and a big east tech review crew whose names and backgrounds we will obtain by subpoenas.
2.each on these individuals will be seeing us and honest judges and juries and our game films and expert witnesses in the civil courts all over the us,unless some of them choose to settle before the complaints are filed in the civil courts and tell the truth about the payoffs made to them by people associated with the usc athletic department, along with their superiors and protecters at the pac 10 conference, jim muldoon and dave cutaia( we do not think that new pac 10 commissioner larry scott had anything to do with this atrocity)and the superiors and protectors of the dishonest big east tech review crew, john marinatto, nick caparelli, and terry mccauley.
3. both the pac 10 conference and the big east conference, along with every other conference and the ncaa, were already on the hook for very substantial damages for dishonet officiating con operations in football and other athletic contests, the vast majority of which did not involve notre dame in any way.
4. we will be collecting those damages also in civil courts all over the us also, as we tear down the current corrupt conference and ncaa systems and replace them with honest and transparent to the public high tech systems.
5. while we never listen to the commentaries provided by pat haden and tom hammond and their female assistant during these broadcasts of notre dame home games, we always record them and listen to them on sundays.
6.while we certainly do not believe that anyone at nbc is responsible for their conduct, turning these broadcasts into infomercials designed to drive recruits away from notre dame and to usc and other schools obviously consitute serious beaches of their contractual obligations to nbc and to nbc's parent,ge, in which we all own shares, along with breaches of their obligations to the advertisers who put up the money for these broadcasts(yes, we own shares in every one of those companies also), and to every person who listens to their fraudulent sales pitches, including recruits and their families whose lives have been ruined as a result of their fraudulent conduct.
7. while the public is aware of some, but nearly all, of pat haden's connections with usc, tom hammond's usc connections are not as well known. well, hammond was co anchor for the broadcast of the barcelona olympics with the infamous oj simpson and, to this day, hammond brags that, despite what oj simpson has done, oj remains one of hammonds best and closest friends.
8. we already know how the financial payoffs to haden and hammond have been funnneled to them for years by certain usc alums and we know about all of their material assets.
9. haden and hammond obviously will also be seeing us and our experts in the civil courts, unless they choose to settle out of court, tell the truth, and produce documents.
10. as for their young lady assistant and other crew assistants, we will be taking each of their depositions. they may simply be people who wanted jobs, but every one of them has direct knowledge of haden's and hammond's instructions and conduct.
11. we often get the question about who we are. well, the word "we", as used in these posts, actually has 2 separate meanings.
12. the 1st refers to myself and my numerous relatives all over the world who will always be fans and admirers of everything fine and honest for which notre dame has always stood. while i did not attend school at notre dame, a number of my relatives have and will continue to do so in every generation to come.
13. the second meaning of the word "we" refers to a large and ever growing number of experienced trial attorneys, of which i am one and the only notre dame fan, who have all polled their skills and resources together to gather the evidence on crooked college sports enterprises, to punish in the civil courts, with severe economic prejudice, every individual and entity involved, and to tear down the current corrupt systems and replace them with honest high tech systems fully transparent to the public.
14. if anyone wants to take a look at a few examples of our previous projects, try the enron and mci worldcom civil rico cases(no, we do not believe in putting non violent criminals in prisons).
15. as is true of the crooked college sports enterprises cases. some people involved in the enron and mici worldcom cases chose to settle before complaints were filed in any court and to pay some damages and tell the truth and produce documents.
16. others, such as ken lay and others at enron chose to threaten us and fight us in the civil courts with the best attorneys that the money they had stolen from other people could buy. the same was true of bernie ebbers and other people at the mci worldcom con operation.
17. we refer to such decisions as acts of premediated economic suicide.they certainly turned out that way for ken lay and bernie ebbers and for many other individuals and entities involved in the enron and mci worldcom con operations.
18. right now, every individual and entity involved in crooked college sports enterprises will have to make decisions similar to those made by ken lay and bernie ebbers and other individuals and entities involved in the enron and mci worldcom civil rico cases.
19. in the case of usc the institution and the usc community, we know that the petey and mikey and their associates never disclosed their cheating scam to the vast majority of those at usc, the educational institution, or within the usc community since the vast majority of you would never have allowed these scams to go on and to damage the school that you love.
20. we know exactly how this con operation of mikey and petey and their assiciates started and has operated.
21. some usc alums who were understandibly frustrated by 13 years of being unable to defeat notre dame teams composed of real student athletes and playing by the rules and with honesty and integrity, despite a signifant level of cheating and rules violations that has always gone on in the usc athletic department.
22. the decisions and actions that have followed;namely, bringing the cheating to much more significant levels was a mistake equivalent to bringing the trojan horse into troy and keeping the trojan horse in the city well after compelling evidence of the dangers to troy were already a matter of public record.
23. we have no desire to destroy usc economically in the civil courts. however, we expect usc to do some serious housecleaning right away.
24.we know about the usc connections at the la county da's office, at the la city attorneys office, and even with certain local judges.
25. these are the connections that mokey and petey and their associates have been depending on to protect them.
26. well, there is nothing that any of these people can do for mikey and petey and their associates now or in the future.
27. for a recent example of our work directly connected with the crooked college sports enterprises project, take a look at our recent victory over the ncaa in the florida courts. after losing in the trial court and trying every possible avenue of appeal, on 10/15/2009, after spending many millions of dollars in attorneys' fees, the ncaa threw in the towel and released every single document and transcript and other record pertaining to their investigation of academic fraud at florida state, a school which actually self reported the violations and cooperated with the ncaa investigation instead of trying to play coverup and pay off people for silence, as mikey and petey and their associates at usc have done so far.
28. the obscure laws on which the ncaa and the conferences and the athletic departments that cheat have been relying for decades to allow them to operate in secrecy and behind closed doors simply did the ncaa no good in the florida state case nor will they do the ncaa, the conferences, or the athletic departments that cheat any good in the many future cases that will be pursued all over the us to force complete disclosure of all documents and other evidence relating to college football and college sports.
GO IRISH!!!
Yes,
I am not sure that you have a IQ or understand football to come back with a comment that someone is trying to be important. You must be on the same Notre Dame crack as most of your fan base continue to think that you are an elite team. Win a game against a quality team and then you can make your comments. It is amazing that your fan base keeps coming up with anything to make them feel good about thier team win they are constantly losing. You fat dumb coach also continues to think he is in some elite class as a coach. Case in point was his issue of thinking they should be rated higher than 25th before the game. It is not surprising, that he does not have many college coaches that respect him or talk to him.
Let me know when Notre Dame, the elite academic institution wins a game and with their superior academic recruiting standards top the list of schools. Last I checked, their were a lot of schools with better football programs, better academic programs and still competing. The only two schools that I know that continue to make this issue are Notre Dame and Maryland, which we know is clearly a fraud.
Mo,
Were you watching the same game I was (I was actually in the stands)??? Barkley had all day to throw on 90% of his dropbacks, and I don't think either his tight end or stud wide receiver could have been any more open for most of the completions. Notre Dame's secondary play was a disgrace on Saturday, and the defensive line didn't get pressure on Barkely until the 4th quarter. Notre Dame may have a long way to go, but Barkley's grandmother could have made most of the throws that he made. The only throw that really impressed me was a long throw up the right hash to the tight end over the outstretched arms of the safety that was running with him. That ball was perfectly thrown and only where the SC TE could catch it. Other than that, any QB in the Division I landscape could have stepped in and played as well.
It was a Pac-10 crew on the field that let SC get away with murder for most of the game. The "muscle flex" call was a makeup call. On the punt right before that, after the ball was dead, and SC player was taunting, the ref warned him, and the idiot shoved the referee. He wasn't flagged or ejected, but his actions are really why the D-Lineman got flagged on the next play for taunting.
I want to know if the officials in the secondary know what defensive holding is, because Golden Tate got mauled a couple of times coming out of cuts when he had faked the CB out of his jock.
1. again, we congratulate charlie and his staff and every notre dame student athlete who also plays football at notre dame for their fine victory over usc on saturday.
2. although the paper records now show losses to michigan and usc, we will get those phony paper records fixed in the civil courts by honest judges and juries and we will put an end in the civil courts to the current corrupt offiating and rules enforcement systems at the ncaa and conference levels.
3.we will make everyone involved in these con operations pay dearly economically in the civil courts and have them banned for life from college sports.
4.we have every confidence that you will all be back and full of that same fighting spirit that you have shown in the usc game and in every other game this 2009 season for boston college and notre dame's future opponents and in the preparation.
5. while the examples of blatantly dishonest officiating from notre dame/usc game are many, our personal favorites are the 3 usc fumble recoveries by notre dame which were given back to usc by dishonest officials. the incident involving the 2 flags, one for a false start by the usc offensive and the second for intentional grounding, a penalty which cannot be declined, actually showed some real creativity by the pac 10 refs. unless they settle before we hit them with civil lawsuits in the courts, watching them trying to explain this and many other acts of dishonest officiating in front of honest judges and juries in courts around the united states will be highly entertaining.
6. you really put the officials in a state of terror when you came back after the officials thought that they had stolen enough points from notre dame and given enough points to usc so that no team on this planet could or would possibly mount a comeback.
7. your comeback caught these dishonest officials during a process which sophisticated dishonest officials refer to as camouflage penalties against usc players who had not been penalized for the exact same conduct during the entire game, which are meant to provide excuses and coverup for their prior dishonest conduct.
8. since olsen, like me, also went to a high school in brooklyn, he
can probably explain to you how we deal with crooked officiating and similar things in brooklyn.
9. we use brooklyn tactics in civil litigations.
CONGRATULATIONS AND GO IRISH!!!
ps if shane and the other nd bashers are getting the impressions that we simply do not care what they think or post, they are correct.
the issues raised here will, if they are not settled, be decided in real courts all over the us, in front of honest judges and juries and based on the film and other evidence and the testimony of our expert witnesses.
what shane and his friends think or post are worth bupkis( bupkis is a yiddish word meaning absolutely nothing).
I am happy to see that the orderlies allowed robertg access to the computer in the day room again. Wow, 28 paragraphs and not one real comment about the game......only his delusions of grandeur and his use of the royal "we" as some sort of secret society of trial lawyers that will bring the NCAA to its knees. Say hi to McMurphy, Chief and Nurse Ratchet for me.
1.yes, the officials at this game know what the rules are.
2. they and those who protect them at the conference and ncaa levels just thought that they could take their payoffs and get away with the same scams that they have been running for so many years.
3. as they will all find out in the civil courts, the committed permediated career and economic suicide on national tv and on the worldwide internet.
GO IRISH!!!
Oh good, another post from robertg. I really don't know what he is trying to accomplish on this board. Dude, you're coming across as a real crazeee. If robertg is really a lawyer, then one would presume he was trained at an ABA approved law school. Every first year law student at any school worth its salt learns the meaning of the term 'justiciable controversy' and knows that an athletic contest is not one. The courts simply will not consider whether a referee's calls were good or bad. Doesn't happen. Period. Now swallow the pill under your tongue and go to sleep with the rest of your ward.
The only reason why the Irish only lost by 7 points was not becuz they've "closed the gap w/ the elite". Puuhleeze! Did you see the stats? Did you see the 1st 3 quarters? Simply put, the Trojans D made stupid head mistakes the last 13 minutes of the game. Had it not been for those the score would have easily been more than a 20 pt lead. Don't kid yourselves Domers. The Irish have a long way to go b4 they compete w/ the elite. Btw, please don't fire Weis.
Cibolo, let me remind you the officials were Pac 10 officials...let me say that again, Pac 10 officials. USC today is what Miami of Florida was in the mid to late 80's..lack of class. Taylor Mays should have been thrown out of the game for trying to headhunt Parris late in the game. There is no room for that crap. Let me also tell you that damn near every analyst, from the guys calling the game to the guys on ESPN agreed with the unsportsmanlike calls against USC. To say officials were paid off, how narrow minded are you?
I agree with you. Going into the game 4-1, and according to those who enjoy a great ND love fest- on the way to the BCS Championship game. Please- stick a fork into Weis and ND. And as for the QB, he was out played by the freashman. Yes he threw a great TD pass to a wideout that made the play. I am so over ND this and ND that. Back in the day they would play a great schedule; now, other then USC who do they play?-- some sorry Big-10 teams-- The Big ten does't rate in the top five conferences.
Again the east coast viewing audience is so wrapped up in its miopic view of the world, they fail to concieve that 2am on the east coast is 11pm the previous evening on the west coast and 8pm the previous day in Hawaii and Alaska, which became states in 1959.
The eastern elite has yet to come to grips with the reality that there has been a power shift in college football and it is south and west. Ask Jim Tressle, Rich Rodriguez, and Joe Pa.
The story of this game isn't about how ND almost won, it's about how SC nearly self-destructed and almost lost. Keith Arnold missed, as did the Irish, on all points.
As far as not seeing one Barkley pass that was "wow", well I saw one. It was a 19 yd reception to Brice Butler over two defenders and in front of another. By the way, I only saw one "wow" pass from Clausen, that was the TD pass to Tate. We must have been watching two different quarterbacks. Heisman? vs. Freshman. Freshman won the statistics game and the ball game. Scoreboard!
this game turned out how i expected, usc would win a close game, say what you will, but weis is the right coach for this program, he's recruting well, they're stealing coveted recruits away from usc, and the coaching staff is a good one, give tenuta another year to get the players to fit his scheme, and the defense will be great... notre dame is certainly the fighting irish, but they have a little ways to go before they become the winning irish...btw, if weis isn't the right man, how about gary patterson? all he does is win everyear with a stingy defense in a very tough mountain west conference...as for those fair-weather fans at usc, who exactly have you played this year?? an overated ohio state team? an overrated cal team? notre dame?, let me give you three schools: stanford, oregon state, and washington, 3 mediocre pac 10 schools? yea, but also 3 schools that beat usc the last 4 years, pete the poodle used to get by on his abundance of talent, but it's caught up to him, he's a clown and usc will NEVER win another national championshp under his immature watch, not while the SEC has a stranglehold on college football
To: Jake the officials could of called a lot of unsportsmanslike calls on ND also. I can think of some like Manti Teo, Brain Smith's attitude and Golden Tate both crosses the line. In the South Bend Tribune Smith is quoted telling the official to get away from him. So don't even go their about the unsportsmanslike call's. Oh yeah legal hit by Taylor Mays on the RB he was still in bounds replay confirm it. Now Joe McKnight had run 4 full strides out of bounds and was tackled no call HMMMMMMMMMM,,,,,,,
To all ND fans who complain about the officiating in this game. I would have to say that is typical. I expected that from you. Someone on here mentioned the fumbles; study the rules. If a players knee touches the ground before the ball comes out, then it is not a fumble. If the ball crosses the goal line before the ball is fumbled, then it is a touchdown. For you to realistically see anything other than that, I would say you are not looking with your eyes but with your emotions. If anyone needs to be upset at the officiating, it is USC. There were countless times I counted that the officials gave a full yard to ND when they marked the spot of the ball. Just look at the last drive when 82 caught the ball over the middle. Where he got hit and landed and where they spotted the ball, even the refs themselves had a disagreement. There was also a late hit call on Taylor Mays. No, I am not referring to the hit when 82 got hurt. I am referring to the hit on the sideline where the ND player had not even stepped out of bounds. He was clearly trying to get any extra yards before he was hit out of bounds. I am pretty sure that if a player is still in bounds, he is fair game. Okay, so you want to argue that he was headed out of bounds, then why not call the same penalty when McKnight took three full steps out of bounds and an ND player dove at his ankles and hit him. That should have been a penalty as well. Bottom line, the officiating was horrible for both sides. Trojan fans are just fortunate that we came out on the winning end. If you ND fans continue to look at this game through your emotions, you will serve your team a great disservice
Not seeing the first three quarters, and only seeing the fourth quarter via the stream from the endzone camera, I had the impression that the game bore out what I hought and what many analysts had been saying before the game, that USC was 14 or so points better - still in another class. Having seen the whole game, my impression was ND really did go toe to toe with USC in most respects. 27 first downs against USC. Take away Joe McNight's long run, he had 3 yards per carry for 18 tries - I'm impressed. I think the same team with a healthly Clausen and Michael Floyd could take this USC team 2 out of 3 tries.
I had the impression that Clausen was not stepping up in the pocket to protect himself - to avoid aggravating his injury. He may have to sit out or become so hobbled to the point that it greatly decrease his effectiveness. Gritty performance very much to his credit though.
I thought what Barkley did most notably was to repeatedly hang on in the pocket under pressure and get rid of the ball. Very impressive for a freshman. He had a lot of wide open receivers though. What does the ND secondary do when they see the QB has to get rid of the ball? When I play basketball and see someone has to get rid of the ball, I move in for a pick and get a lot of picks that way. Sometimes with the ND secondary, its almost like they're playing an area, and don't close until they see the ball headed that way.
I think the team took another step toward deciding and proving to themseves that they can do this. The season began with a lot of questions in this regard left over from the past. If they take that to the bank and don't slack, the team could do quite well.
A whole series of horrible calls went against USC...undoubtedly because of the credible threats of robertg to take down the entire corrupt college football system (by using honest judges and juries) who are against the honest and trustworthy irish football team.
in the first quarter Manti Te'o clobbers Barkley as he is stepping out of bounds...no call. Yet Taylor Mays lays the wood to Armondo Allen WHILE HE IS STILL INBOUNDS along the sidelines....15 yard personal foul.
Everson Griffen is flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct when he sacks Jimmy Pickle and "flexes"...15 yards.
Manti Te'o lays a good hit on McCoy and gives a similar pose....no flag.
Joe McKnight makes a nice run...goes out of bounds, when this big tub-of-goo who goes by the name Ian Williams takes out McKnight after he had been out of bounds for 5 steps, he landed very awkwardly and easily could have been injured....no call.
And talk about a lack of class....several 'SC players came over to shake Clausens hand after the game and he just pushed them away...real classy and sportsman like.
Everything you wrote is how I feel. Well said...I believe Notre Dame will win out & see USC in the BCS ....
I have to disagree with point number 4 regarding Matt Barkley, in his first five games he has beaten two ranked teams on the road and unless I am wrong that is two more wins than Clausen has in his career.
I also agree with a lot of fans from both sides that the officiating left a lot to be desired. I am a big time USC fan but as a ref I would have probably ejected Mays in the 4th quarter for the Parris hit. At the same time the hit on Allen was a legit play and should not have been flagged.
Remember that after the Push Bush game, ND was blown out by USC three straight times and my gut is telling me that this will happen again b/c this ND team was filled with seniors from Weiss' recruiting classes and USC has a very young team with a lot of the starters coming back next year including Barkley.
Sorry Trojan fans no national title hopes for you. Ohio State losing to Purdue and only beating the Irish by 7 you didn't even cover the spread. You put 501 yards of offense and almost blow it in the fourth quarter!! You need a big win and lots of style points and right know your quality victories are coming up short. I don't think beating the Ducks will help much considering they already lost to Boise State good team yes, not in a BCS conference. Learn to beat in conference cupcakes and you won't have this problem. Enjoy the rose bowl and be sure to pound some big 10 oppenent since it seems to be the only thing you can do.
Art,
Nice to have you here. Enjoyed your comments and insights. But could you do me a favor and get rid of the WW Board trash that has wondered over here. These brain fried Raider fans need to be kept in their cage over there.
Defense wins championships and my worst nightmare occurred on Saturday. We don't have a legitimate pass rush and our secondary is one of the worst in the nation. Nobody closes on the football when it is in the air and people appear to be constantly out of position. A Lou Holtz coached team doesn't lose that football game with two weeks to prepare. We could make all the excuses in the world and there is no consolation prize for losing. SC has a bunch of thugs and half of them will end up in jail. They never quit and this is a special group for that reason. They need to get ready for BC and run the table to get a good bowl bid. Pete Carroll gets on my nerves and he will end up on the other side of the fence someday. Maybe he should worry about kids graduating instead of trying to win every football game. Where will half of his kids be if they don't make it into the NFL. NFL stands for "NOT FOR LONG".
ND technically lost by 14. Agreed, that penatly on Taylor Mays was a joke. The ND player was still in bounds. I'll go a step further. After Everson Griffen gets flagged for the muscle flexing after the sack on Clausen, #5 on NB made a big play (2mins later)and flexed his muscles, yet no flag. After an Irish TD, the ND player was waving the #1 finger, while tapping his elbow with the other hand. This pesisted for 30seconds, yet no flag.
I usually don't complain about officiating, as the HORRIBLE calls balance out over the entire game. This was so slanted in ND's favor, i couldn't even believe what i was watching. Complete rig job in South Bend by Pac 10 officials. unreal!
The whining and sour grapes on this blog has gone off the charts.
You are right about one thing..your pass defense stinks...and yet you all want to believe Notre Dame is 'almost there'...not with a pass defense that ranks 110th out of 130 schools.
USC players thugs? I don't think so...the only thugish act I saw was your 'Golden boy' Tate kicking a drum in the hands of an 'SC band member after sliding into the band..real tough guy...can't beat the team so take it out on a band member.
Clausens refusal to shake the hands of 'SC players after the game was also thugish and unsportsmanlike.
Taylor Mays hit on your pink wearing pretty boy Parrish was a clean hit...the call that the refs. made was wrong..they called "hitting a defenseless player"...that call is reserved for players that don't have the ball and are blindsided...Parrish had the ball and was still in play when hit...your problem is you have never seen someone hit with the fury of Mays..clearly neither have the refs. otherwise they wouldn't have made that call...or the bad call of 'late hit' when Mays pounded armondo allen into next week while running inbounds...the refs. couldn't believe a guy could be knocked out so hard if he wasn't out of bounds.
So true bigal..but you can't convince these guys...they are all drinking green hateraid.
Are you serious? They came and did not play football until midway thru the 4th quarter, last I checked good teams play all 60 minutes! ND has no hustle I sat 25 rows up from the sc bench right on the 50 and they were up and amped from beginning to end and then you take a gander across the field at ND's bench and the players are most of the time not even paying attention and standing around catching flies with their mouths open, NO DRIVE and no desire until 13 minutes left in the game?Unacceptable and I am sorry but the diff is PC is the best cheerleader and CW is a SLUG!!! Move on charlie, brian kelly needs your office! Forgive me but I expect wins as in W not morale they have fight in them victories PUKE!
Its a sad day for Notre Dame football when not losing by double digits is a good day. Notre Dame has 7 straight loses to teams ranked in the top 10 and if not for a few timely bad calls and no calls by the Refs. This game wouldnt have been close. And it only gets worse because next year you come to LA. Can you say 0-9 against the Trojans?
Sharkey,
You should remember that Weise's first two years where his best. Since then Notre Dame has gone 14 - 17 including 7 straight losses to teams ranked in the top 10. And since Weise has been head coach of ND, all of his recruiting classes have been ranked in the top 10 except for last years class.
Sharkey you should also examine why losing to USC by less than double digits is considered a good day.
Robert,
Notre Dame dropped in the poll and there are no Moral Victories. I love the fact that you love your team, but don't mistake your team for great. Notre Dame has not beat a team with a winning record in 2 years.
At some point, the ND Administration has to admit that they made a mistake bringing Weis in. His emphasis on offense, to the exclusion of defense, dooms ND to continuing loses against ranked teams. The defense, as usual was terrible, and the offensive line continues to fail to protect Clausen. How much more misery do ND fans have to put up with, as Charlie continues to fail to address the issue?
Cibolo,
Finally someone hit on the fact that without those penalties, this game isn't close. 2nd and 15, Notre Dame does take that shoot down field.
Wonderful! Is it any surprise that ND is no longer ranked? Bet some are surprised, and bet that some thought ND may have even moved up in the rankings. This isn't horse shoes boys. BCS game? I don't think so. Let's hope we smash BC and maybe finish out undefeated. Then maybe we'll be in a BCS game. But win it? That will be a challenge.
Would have been nice to have scored on that last drive. Then power it in for the 2 points and be done with it. Then maybe we would have moved up 2 spots in the poles.
Don't hate Pete Carroll for doing what he does best - beat Notre Dame! He's pretty darn good at it. He does not respect Charlie Wise, and nor do any of the people associated with the football program. ( I still have people in the know at SC ). If Charlie Wise gets their respect it will only come from beating SC, and beating them on a regular basis.
Personally, Domers shouldn't give a rat's u-know-what if SC respects Wise. I would love nothing more for Wise to be the guy to turn this program around. He, in my humble opinion, is turning this program around, and I think he will get enough time to prove it. He should beat SC next year. I've seen it done for years, and will see it again.
Thats right they will beat sc next year with a whole new young OL! ahhh hah! Our Defense got their arses whipped all day long and to add insult to injury we also found out hoe far our OL has not come since the past 2 seasons!
Gees EVERYONE,
How come nobody is talking about the 20 SECONDS WEIS let go by. SORRY, I am a believer and die hard IRISH fan, but WEIS IS NOT THE MAN. He CANNOT manage a team or TIME and that's his job.
Ya think Brian Kelly would have done that. I want Brian. Give him this team and next year they will be in the top 15 and it won't take him 5 years. And, if Tanutta is soooo good, then why did he not get recruitted before and spent most of his time at GT. Come on, wake up fans. Medocrity is the problem and a coach that can't do two things at once. Ah...
Karen, I couldn't agree more. The real travesty here is that, even with Urban Meyer's recent pay increase, there are still 2 coaches who earn more........yes, one of them is Charlie Weis. Meyer has 2 championships and is working on another in the short time he's been at UF. He worked miracles at Bowling Green and then at Utah and now at Florida. That's no accident. We need a coach who understands this game better and who doesn't consistently show poor clock mgmt. I hate hearing people say wait til next year, our D is gonna be great, etc. I don't know about you but I'm not getting any younger. I'm tired of waiting. Let's look at the dollars and cents here. If Meyer wants the premiere job, let's go get him. Charlie, we gave you the benefit of the doubt and let you show us what you could do but when Faust has a better record against ranked teams I have to say,"Sorry Charlie, not all tuna gets to be starkist."
As a second generation USC Alum, a physician and chief of staff of a large hospital, I find your comments as inappropriate as your justification. USC and UND are great schools which provide first rate educations. I have always respected and admired Notre Dame with the many traditions, beautiful campus and alumni support; just like USC.
It was not all that long ago that UND was on a 13 year streak against USC. Times have changed, but that does not justify the bitter and uniformed commentary. It is and always will be a game, not life and death. Get over it.
OK, OK. Maybe I was overly optimistic. I got lost for a moment or two. We would all love to get Urban Meyer, and if he does get that National Title again he may, he did, I believe say, he wanted to coach Notre Dame some day, be ready for a real challenge. And I'm certainly not getting any younger either. You won't find me crying in my beer if Charley leaves for Urban. But wait 'till next year. It may be Charlie's last year.

It's frustration. Just frustration. We are just tired of not reaching a parity with a team we once beat 13 times. Every year we think it might be the year and every year goes by with out a win. You are a gentleman, and I know many fine ladies and gentlemen fro USC. I even sat in the student section when I was a teen and saw the Irish beat Troy 55 to zip. The student body there were all ladies and gentlemen even though I was the only one holding a flash card and an Irish banner. Go figure. So a win is all I need before I pass on. But you sir are a gentleman.
Searle: Were you watching the same game as the rest of the viewing public, or were your suffering from a shortage of blood flow to the brain brought on by a tight fitting "doo-rag?" I watched Pete Caroll's reaction to the Irish offense and defense during the last 5 minutes of the game, and spin it any way you like, but everyone in the nation watching could see and smell the fear surrounding him and the thought of an impending upset. USC has been unmasked, and that reality should have become apparent to you after the Washington "Huskies" handed them their annual "beat down." Refresh my memory, "dude," but how many consecutive games had the "Huskies" lost before they met the Mighty Limbo Kings from So Cal?
I am sick of Charlie Weis.He had his chances and it did not work.I wish he would just quit after this year but I now he will not.He will only leave when he is fired. It is a disgrace that this team lost to 2 teams with freshman quarterbacks. This team has no running attack and a dreadful defense.I do not believe this team will finish 10-2.Most likely it will be 8-4 at best. They will lose to Boston College next week and Pittsburgh.
Dude,
What is your problem!USC stands for the "University of Southern Criminals". Pete Christmas Carroll will get nailed sooner or later for NCAA recruiting violations. You don't keep getting the caliber players he gets without doing something wrong. Taylor Mays is a wimp. Golden Tate caught the ball on the five bounced off one defender and another(Taylor Mays) and just stood there in the endzone after the hit. Taylor Mays is a real tough guy! At least the Irish will graduate and land good jobs with Fortune 500 Companies. What will the SC players do if they don't make it in the NFL?
apparently you are not able to voice your unhappiness to chuckys wife either about a loss, check out the article in the ny times titled weis finds an unyielding supporter in his wife. She is clearly as obnoxious as here husband. BTW I am sick and tired of seeing that charlie Jr on the sidelines every game with a headset and play book in his hands as if he is being payed by this university to coach! Who in the hell does this in all my years of watching CFB I have never seen a coach let his kid hang around that way! It is clearly all about the weises!!!!!!
angry former New Yorker:
Grow up dude usc has some very influential grads as well! Lets face it "bro" Nd would be just another catholic university if it was not for all that past football glory.I am so sick and tired of this BS about how great ND is academically, I am a nd grad and yes it is a good school, but far from ivy league! This I know will get some domers in a huff but ND is such an Ivy league wannabe their ivy league envy has reached epic proportions! Dr. Peter I apologize for all the nose in the air crap it really is shameful!
To every one Nd Lovers and haters alike. I call myself the biggest Notre dame fan to ever live. With that being said, i am also a realist. So here it is. Notre dame is not quite back yet. Their offense is, but not the Defense. The defense is what is holding us back this year. Look at our two losses and you tel me, should you lose scoring 27 or even 34 points. I dont think so. but we have managed to let these two teams simplly out score us.
About these polls. Ohio State lost to USC. This was the second week of the season, so do you think Barkley has gotten better or worse? Than they lose to a Purdue team that ND beat without their starting QB for 2 1/2 quarters. Do you really think Ohio state should be in the top 25? Or how about a 3-3 Oklahoma team? Three and three, hmm, the lost to the only competition they have faced this year. a .500 team does not qualify for being in the top 25. And then you look at missouri, i know they are not now, but they moved in the top 25 after beating Nevada 31-21. ND 35-0 over nevada. And that is with a horrible defense. I am not saying that ND should be in the top 15 or anything, but they really are getting shafted in the polls. i would legitimately put them at 23 or 24. But some how Other teams get rewarded for the same things ND gets punished for, I dont get it.
Could somone shine some light on this for me?
Incredible.......
One football game and 90 recorded posts (91 counting mine).
ND is not there yet. Anyone with any sense can see the offense can get it done but the defense, for a myriad of reasons, can not. Weis has had ample time to retool the defense yet it seems to come up short every week. On paper, they appear much better than the recent past. Unfortunately, the games are not played on paper.
As a life-long Domer, I have to say I like Pete Carroll and the way he handles himself. I thought his team lacked a bit of class at the end but you can probably say that about most teams depending on your perspective.
You anti-ND people need to get a life. SC was the better 60 minute team. Period. ND is closing the gap but isn't there. This board has become an opportunity to whack ND for having a TV contract anyone else would die for and an opportunity to smack a coach because his physique doesn't match the same one you all see in the mirror every day. I'm just guessing, but I'm guessing that Keith Arnold has got to be a bit bewildered by the reaction to his column about one game. I repeat.....incredible.
This is what i mean, let me break it down for the haters.
#19 Ohio State.Has wins against Navy, TOledo, Illinois, and wisconsin. Lost to USC in second week with a two week old Quarter back, and then loses to Purdue (a team ND beat)
#20 Pitt has wins against Youngstown state, Buffalo, Navy, Louisville Uconn aqnd Rutgers Lost to a 3-4 N.C State
#21 Wisconsin has wins against N. Illinois, Fresno State, Wofford, and minnesota. Lost to Ohio state at home and Iowa at home
#22 Arizona has wins against Central michigan, N. Arizona, Oregon State, and Stanford. Lost to Iowa and Washington (another team ND beat)
#23 West virginia has wins against Liberty, East Carolina, Colorado, Syracuse and Marshall lost To Auburn
#24South Carolina Has wins against N.C State, Florida Atlantic, Ole miss, South Carolina State and Kentucky
#25 Kansas Has beaten N. Colorado, Utep, Duke, Southern Miss, and Iowa State. Lost to a 2-4 Colorado Team (Toledo Beatb them as well)
And now unranked Notre Dame has wins over Nevada (3-3), Michigant State 4-3, Purdue that beat Ohio State, And Washington That beat USC and Arizona. We Lost to 4-2 Michigan on the road, and A much improved Usc team. (much improved compared to week 2)
So tell me where these teams have a better resume than Notre Dame?
We At least lost two games with both teams having winning records and one of them being in the top 5. The other on the road, and both came down to the last seconds. How about Ohio State? How About Kansas? Looking at this you cant honestly say that ND is being treated fairly. The polls are a shaft and it proves that people just do not want to admit that ND is much improved than last year. Like i said i am not saying put them in the top 15, But to not be at, at least 25 is a sham, and it shows that people that do these polls are just ND hates like most of the people on this board. Tell me where i am wrong, because i have done the research. Have you?
You BRO, take a chill pill! What is your opinion of O.J. who is a USC graduate? You call yourself an alumni! You should be ashamed of yourself as Knute Rockne is probably rolling over in his grave due to your stupid comments. You should be proud to be an alumni and not throw ND under the bus. Are you sure you didn't grow up in Southern California the land of Granola(Fruits, Flakes, and Nuts)?
Bro, I am a New Yorker, apparently you could not handle New York, probably a bit to diverse for a hick like yourself. BTW I call myself an alumnus not an alumni.Clearly you did not go to ND or SC.
I am in charge of 5 people! I own a dodge stratus! Hey you guys have chess at Yale don't you? How's the team been doing? Killer recruiting class last year... troll
I would like to see ND play USC again in a bowl game - I saw my first USC - ND game in LA when I was five and my uncle broke my ND flag sick when ND scored. I was in the Trojan podium room after USC-ND 1974 and Bear Byrant was talking about how much he enjoyed the game - couldn't understand 10% of what he said and my relatives are from Tennesee. ND lost 49-24 - that USC team was awesome.
So I want another shot at USC with this team and two great receivers out there - is Robby Parris going to be ok - is his knee ok - I hope so - that last catch he made was one of the most courageous I ever saw.
Apparently the AP, Harris, Legends and USA Today polls don't agree with you as SC moved up in the ratings, while the computers considered a win against ND such a negative SC fell to 11th.
In addition, Pete's on and off field frustration with the refs has (partially) confirmed by the PAC-10 officials. In case you missed it, read about it here: http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/33450691/ns/sports-college_football/
Helen,
You are right on the money. ND consistently graduates 90+ percent of their seniors which usually puts them at or close to the top of major college programs. This is compared to Texas and Oklahoma and the other top 10 football powers which often graduate an embarassing 50 percent of their seniors. Of course, when you make 15 million dollars for a BCS bowl game who cares if your seniors move on to lucrative careers as used car salesman. We all know that winning the national championship is more important than being able to make a decent living once football is over. This is especially pertinent when you consider less than one-half of one percent of college football players are able to make a viable living in the NFL. Here's another little known fact. ND requires their incoming freshman to have higher entrant standards than the minimum standards required by the NCAA. This means ND football players are generally academically better performers as compared to the other football powers, and hence the high graduation rate. This also means the stellar football player, but marginal student, is eligible for the traditional football powers but is unable to meet ND's higher admission standards. Before you say that is ND's fault for having higher standards than required by the NCAA, ND has admitted that a college education is the primary reason for going to college and not winning a national championship. I believe ND should be commended for their student first and athlete second attitude as they will be unable to compete with the elite football schools on the football field but will kick their butts on the business field.
WWW,
I understand you went to an Ivy league school alright, you just forgot to mention you went as the yard boy trimming the Ivy from the buildings. Your the idiot...even if USC is a top thirty school, their athletes are not. Check the graduation rates. Speaking of graduation, that is obviously something you did not do.
