Evan Sharpley: Teacher, quarterback, slugger... and hard body?

While I realize we’d all rather turn this place into the dregs of Notre Dame blogdom, I thought it might be an appropriate time to bring up something a little bit lighter. Tensions are high, emotions are fragile, people are close to losing their collective minds, but we can all take a deep breath and maybe get a chuckle from backup quarterback Evan Sharpley.

Sharpley is one of the more under-appreciated members of the football team, coming back for a fifth season even after it was clear Dayne Crist had moved ahead of him in the quarterbacking depth chart. Sharpley was a two-sport athlete at Notre Dame, finishing his collegiate baseball career by getting drafted late by the Seattle Mariners. But instead of walking away from the football team to begin his baseball career, Sharpley decided to come back to help the team and get a head start on his life after sports, where he’ll be a teacher and a coach.

While Charlie Weis has retired the scout team player of the week award because it’s continually going to Sharpley, the quarterback was given a different prestigious award... this time from Faith and Fitness Magazine.

Sharpley was named one of the magazine’s “2009 Top Bods on Campus.” So let’s add that to Sharpley’s resume. History teacher, quarterback, slugger... and hard body.

Evan has a riveting Q&A with Faith & Fitness magazine, answering questions like “What physical features qualify you as having a top bod?” (Evan says he gets the most compliments on his derriere.) I might be poking fun now, but it’s a pretty interesting pairing -- faith and fitness -- and I’ve got nothing but respect for Evan on the honor, even if it might get him razzed by a few teammates.

I know people want to keep railing on the loss to Navy, but sometimes you’ve got to come up for air for a few minutes. Congrats to Evan on the honor... you are truly a renaissance man.
