Kelly reels in three more recruits

Jan 31, 2010, 3:47 PM EDT

Word is coming off campus that Brian Kelly and staff reeled in three more recruits this weekend, adding former Cincinnati commit Luke Massa at quarterback, quarterback/athlete Derek Roback, who had planned to play at Toledo, and tight end/defensive end prospect Bruce Heggie.

Massa is high school teammates with offensive line target Matt James, which bodes well for the Irish’s pursuit of the blue-chipper, who was also on campus this weekend.

None of these guys are the types of players that will move Notre Dame up the recruiting rankings, but fill some needs and bulk up the class to 20 commits with just three days to go.

More to come as word continues to break…

Keith Thanks for the good news to start the week, hopefully another set of announcements including James, Schwenke, Ioane, and Spond will quickly follow.
…and how sweet if we hear of Irish commitments from Henderson, Ferguson, et al. Gotta keep dream’in.

I agree with you Jan. Those four names are key for a solid and balance class. Throwing 1 or 2 blue chipper in there as well would be very nice. The last couple of signings seems to be the RKGs Kelly was talking about. Good ball players with a good head on the shoulder. Kelly will do very well developping that kind of kids.

5 more please, James , Ioane , Spond, Schwenke & Jones. Life would be good.

I am not sure if I concur with you here. See you do make the best point, I don’t believe you’ve really given a large amount of thought to the opposite side of the argument. Perhaps I can write a guest post or a follow-up, just make me aware.

It’s great news to hear about the three future Irish prospects, who seem happier and more excited than kids in a “candy store” to get offered IRISH scholarships. Looks like they can add depth to a depleated class. Furthermore it’s nice to know that we’re getting kids who want to be in South Bend and have nothing to lose and everything to gain from the opportunities ND has to offer and I’m certain that they will repay Coach K and the Irish staff by working hard to prove to these scouts out there that it’s not always about how many stars you had when you got to South Bend but how many stars you’ve gained when you leave South Bend. That being said with the signing of Massa, seems like Matt James should be following there after which sounds like that would cement Seantrell Henderson’s decision on being a buckeye given him and Matt play the same position although I would love to have both anchoring opposite sides along the o line. After that’s been decided must gets are Iaone, Spond, Schwenke with my all I ever wanted for Christmas gift of either EGO Ferguson and or Christian Jones preferably Jones if only one.

Point well taken Jan. To add to that one’s gotta beleive that Coach K has maken it a point to the remaining four and five star recruits that if either combination of James and Henderson or Bryant and Ferguson, better yet if all four end up in South Bend they could wind up being the vital cogs in bringing a Natn’l Title back to South Bend.

I am pleasantly surprised by the weekend developments and the recruits that have shown intrest in Notre Dame. It would be nice to have some of the other players mentioned here as well. I think Coach Kelly had done a respectable job of holding things together and bringing in some players who he can develop.

Derek Roback is a quality athlete and was all-state at three different positions in HS (WR, QB and P). He’s a nice add to the class.
