That's what he said: Brian Kelly

Sep 19, 2010, 4:34 PM EDT

Moments after the loss last night, Brian Kelly addressed the media. Here’s what he said:

  1. Tim - Sep 19, 2010 at 5:21 PM

Wow coach thanks for the info that you didn’t make the plays to win. I would have never guessed by watching the game. Out coached again. What great sin did Notre Dame commit to get a clueless coach like you? Return to sender.

  2. Danno27 - Sep 19, 2010 at 6:07 PM

Regarding the idiotic, nonsensical comment by the sad sack Tim: ignore.
Regarding this post: I love BK. I hate losing. ARGGHHHHH!!!! I’ll feel better when we beat Stanford.

  3. ryan - Sep 19, 2010 at 7:33 PM

a nice change of pace for past coaches, he sounds legitimately sick of how that ended. i can only hope the players feel the same way.

  4. TIM - Sep 19, 2010 at 7:46 PM

  5. BryanW - Sep 19, 2010 at 8:38 PM

Seriously? We’re going to pass final judgment on a coach after his first 3 games? That would make Lou Holtz (1-2) and idiot and Ty Willingham (3-0) a great coach. It hurts to lose, and it hurts even more to lose back-to-back close games. But come on Tim, you need to chill out. I don’t know if Kelly is going to be a champion or another 5-and-out guy, but neither do you. Just let him coach some games before you fire him. Also, you might want to reconsider typing profane and inflammatory comments in all caps. It does very little to help your argument. It pretty much just makes you look like an emotional half-wit.

  6. Mark - Sep 19, 2010 at 9:06 PM

You’ll have to excuse tiny tim. He just jumps around from board to board trying to show and succeeding in showing what a moron he can be.
From Brian Kelly when asked if his players felt robbed by the missed delay of game penalty at the end of the game:
“I just think they’re excuses. We had a chance to defend the play, we didn’t defend the play. Regardless of what may or may not be the case, this is still about what happens on the field. We had our opportunity to defend the play.”
How can you not love the guy’s attitude and approach?….unless you’re tiny tim.

  7. Roger - Sep 19, 2010 at 9:36 PM

Yes, it is only 3 games and I still have difficulty watching BK. His body language, his temper tantrums, his demeanor to his players and coaches. We have all watched many, many football games both ND and others and I have never seen anything like it. Lou on occasion getting in a face mask but, this is just hard to watch wether we are winning or losing. I hope someone saw all this coming watching him last year at Cincy. Swarbrick he is your hire, wonder if he speaks to you that way. I am not sure this is the way to motivate kids, in practice sure but, for the world to see, no.

  8. Jermaine - Sep 19, 2010 at 10:46 PM

Really what I don’t understand that if you had glass you still couldn’t see. To the point when I see that the qb does at times bothers me throwing the ball where you shouldn’t. Many times M. Floyd was open he would throw the ball where it was difficult for him to make a play on the ball. You want the best out of the players and making mental mistakes in game 3 ain’t going to get the job done. B. Kelly is a good coach and the Defense is not playing at a high level at times can’t even line up right.

  9. Jermaine - Sep 19, 2010 at 10:48 PM

The question is are you a Notre Dame Fan? Or someone with a mental issue?

  10. dom - Sep 20, 2010 at 3:35 AM

All Irish fans need to chill out a bit. Let Kelly do his thing for 3 years and let’s see what he can do. He needs to change the whole culture in the program before he can start getting these kids to believe they are the best team in the country. I really hope Kelly works on getting his defense to perform better against the run though cause being ranked in the 90’s against the run does not cut it.

  11. FightinMad35 - Sep 20, 2010 at 10:24 AM

Enough already with this “lets have patience” crap. ND has lost 2 games that could have easily been won. I see too many ND fans that are used to losing and are very comfortable wishing for “next year, the next 4 years, let’s wait til he recruits his own guys”.. a crock of malarkey.. coaches, players and fans alike want wins.. I want wins.. not talk of next year and what’s to come.. This team is competitive enough to win…. turnovers, missed tackles and some home cooking from the officials killed ND Saturday..BK gets paid the big bucks to at least be prepared for a fake.. and if you were prepared then don’t send Harrison out in coverage..He hasn’t made a play in the secondary the past 5 years. geessh.. I’m still ticked about it.. but props to Dantonio for making a great call, even if the clock was expired and should have been a penalty that would have surely tipped BK to play prevent in case of fake.. oh well.. On to Stanford….

  12. orrsra - Sep 20, 2010 at 12:25 PM

Shades of J. Faust. We have been outplayed and out coached the last two games. I have not given up however, there is still time for this coach & team to right the wrongs of the last two games. Crist is really puzzling to me. Every time he makes a stupid play and the camera is on Coach & him he seems to be in a daze. No expression on his face, just a blank stare. Fire up Crist. I really wonder if he needs to sit. This offense needs a running QB that is not in a daze. No more excuses, I have seen many 1st year or first time starters beat ND, now it is our turn. Floyd looked a little I don’t give a s_ _ _ t at first but improved. Our defensive backs stink. #5 is lookin good as well as or Off/Def lines, but we still can not stop the run and are about sackless. We need a big three TD win over “S” this weekend. We need that killer instinct. Kelly you are not in Kansas anymore, wake up and smell the toilet bowl and maybe then we will turn it around and get in a big time bowl this season. I still am waiting/hoping and praying GO IRISH.
    12 – Mon Sep 20,2010 12:16 PM ET ENOUGH SAID Think “S”

  13. blackirish - Sep 20, 2010 at 2:29 PM

I love Notre Dame been watching for years. So to want to fire the coach after 3 games is crazy. Everyone needs time to recruit. That’s the name of the game. Obviously Weis and his staff cared nothing for recruiting defensive speed. Look at the runs to the outside we don’t have speed to get there. Help is on the way. The Irish have been willing to play more games in Texas and the south. Exposing more recruits down south to Notre Dame. I think they are realizing the team speed they need is in the south. Once we address overall team speed I think we will be unstoppable. What I want to see is that killer edge back. That the defense gets that Ravens defense mentality. That every play we will out hussle you, chase you, knock you down. Essentially we are going through the same thing the Big Ten is learning if you don’t recruit speed you will be left in the dust. Let’s see how things turn out. Patience people patience. I doubt you were all good at your job the first 3 days you were there.

  14. steve - Sep 20, 2010 at 8:51 PM

I saw what your talking about but, I didn’t see Kelly talk to Crist that way.

  15. Phil - Sep 20, 2010 at 8:52 PM

Tim and all the other detractors,
I assume that if you are lawyers that you are all on the Supreme Court of the United States, if you are doctors you are taking turns as head of the Cleveland Clinic and as Surgeon General and that you are all otherwise winning what is comparable to the National Championship in whatever occupation you are involved. If so, then you can complain about what Brian Kelly is doing. If not, the shut up and Brian Kelly won’t put his National Championships in YOUR FACE.

  16. aov - Sep 20, 2010 at 9:37 PM

    Hey Phil,
Good luck if you think Brian Kelly is going to win a national championship. It is never going to happen! ND should have hired Jim Harbaugh he wanted the job, but ND would not even give him a interview because he was divorced. ND gives a honnorary doctorate degree to President Obama a man who is against everything the Catholic faith reresents, but they will not hire a coach because he was divorced. ND is kind of like Obama say one thing do another. Keep on living in your dream world thinking Brian Kelly is going to win a national championship. Thanks for the laugh.

  17. kelly green - Sep 20, 2010 at 10:14 PM

3 games is not enough to judge a coach when he inherits the players from the prior coach. You can’t build a defense in one year when the defense was virtually ignored by Mr Arrogant (Weis)during his tenure.
Having said that it would be nice for Kelly to run a hybrid of his offense geared towards more ball possession until he recruits some speed on defense.

  18. jdh - Sep 21, 2010 at 7:26 AM

I love ND. However, Coach Kelly is not the guy. He wont last three years. Sorry, he just doesn’t have what it takes. ND’s defense and Coach Kelly’s game management will not let ND win enough games to keep him around longer than three years. I hate to say it, but he’s going to be worse than Charlie Weis. A true college coach would have been ready for a fake field goal. I think a high school coach would have even been ready for it. Yes, I know it’s only been three games, but that’s enough to know that he wont make it.

  19. bs - Sep 21, 2010 at 12:19 PM

how can you be ready for a fake anything? thats why it’s called a fake, a trick play. Let’s not can the guy 3 games in. it’ll happen, just look at the guy, it’ll happen!!!! GO IRISH!!!

  20. ICorrectDumbPosts - Sep 21, 2010 at 12:39 PM

Tim, he is required by Notre Dame, who is required by NBC to participate in pre and post-game interviews, whether he wants to or not. All you can do after a loss, if you are of some character, is admit you were beat by a better team, which is what he did. I’m not sure if you were expecting him to say more meaningful after a loss like “Well, we have a little surprise.. So stay tuned..”. He showed class, which is more than you’ve showed. So YOU get a life.
    – a 16 year old.

Jdh, are you a fortune teller?

  22. JML72 - Sep 21, 2010 at 3:46 PM

Time to wake up from la la land… If anyone thought that Brian Kelly would come in and change the program immediately then they are fools. You got to remember that it has been years of poor coaching and its gonna take awhile to get this program back where it needs to be. Brian Kelly is going to improve this team but it will take time. I am actually glad we are sitting at 1-2 and not having this disillusion of being something that we are not. I hated when we would have immediate success and then end up getting blown out in a BCS game b/c we were over achieving. I think we are on the right track and we are sitting right where we should be 1-2 and possible will be a couple more weeks before we win again but as long as we are improving in those losses and gaining recruits we should be sitting pretty good for 2011. Brian Kelly understands that this year was gonna be a questionable one, and hopefully things will click later in the season so we can get to a bowl game and win, instead of immediate success and getting smoked in a a bowl game that we have no business being in.
    GO IRISH!!

  23. DC - Sep 21, 2010 at 6:45 PM

I think Coach Kellys play calling is suspect at best.He may end up being a good coach but he is only average now.It is one thing to win with the Cincy schedule but all togather different with ND.
