Our problems are readily evident…

Our current players stink. They are way below the averager of typical ND recruits in the past. The muystique is not sufficient to lure the really good high school players. In addition, our admissions reqirements are too stingent. No blue chip recruit would in his right mind to come here.

The coaching staff is young and still making rookie mistakes. It’s too early to make a coaching change, but our future looks very dim indeed if the current situtation perpetuates.

The ND magic, mystique, and tradition ended 15 years ago. Players pay lip service to it, but it doesn’t really mean anyting.

Bottom line…it’s going to be a rough few seasons at ND.

Two years from now we’ll all be very happy with BK and the program he’s established. I’m as frustrated as everybody else, obviously wanting ND to do well, but he’s got to be given time. It will come together.

Wow that is rude to say the least. Jimmy and Golden both left becuase Charlie wasn’t coming back. New coach new system not a pro style offense could see that coming a mile away. Both will do fine in the NFL and to wish them ill well the doesn’t sit right with me these guys gave their best to the school and to the coach. Lets talk about the injuries Kelly came in saying that this team would be the best condition team ever great. Hamstring injuries come from improper warm up and improper strectching seems like we have alot of these this year made someone should be checking the workouts for this team. Still even with the injuries bad coaching calls have cost us at least 2 made 3 games.

Some of your comments Keith brings me to something I told myself after last year I wouldn’t bring up, Clausen and Tate!! Two of the most prolific players to ever wear the blue and gold and it was at times a pleasure to watch them play! Now I have felt this way since they both had their little fiasco with Charlie, they have both cemented their stature in the history of Irish lore as the ones who bailed early and couldn’t win if winning kicked them in the face!! They were selfish and stupid for leaving, they fell in the draft righteously so and I’m happy they did!! 2 pre-Madonna’s whom never could win the little one let alone the big! In my eyes they were both at Notre Dame as a stepping stone to get to the NFL and that’s the way CW recruited them! That is why they will be failures in the NFL!!! How can you come to ND and not want to finish what you started? MONEY is the only possible reason…..unless you where only in it for yourself to begin with??? I pick the latter.

Would have to think the injuries are hampering there ability to move forward… when you are taking a group of kids and teaching them a brand new system while putting all of your resources into your main starting guys and in the meantime trying to get the younger guys as many reps as reasonably possible, you run out of time, it’s just the nature of the beast. These guys will all get better as being thrown into the fire is exactly what has happened to them…Do we really expect them to just win , without prior experience? We expect too much from this young group let me reiterate YOUNG! In all reality 5th year seniors are even young on this team after all they are all learning a brand new system….Right! I as well as the rest of you am tired of losing, it’s a thought process that needs to change more than anything fans and players alike!

I agree with mattnef – there’s still a lot of good potential with Kelly.
My concern – and I guess this fits the Injury topic – is why isn’t this team improving as the year goes on? They just looked better against Purdue and Michigan than they did against Tulsa and Navy. THAT for me is the big concern. Losing is fine so long as indeed these kids are getting better.

What do you think, Keith?

Injuries are merely a convenient excuse.

We suck because our players and coaches stink.

We don’t have the talent to just “chalk up wins” anymore.

Every game is going to be a struggle with this cast of players and coaches.

We must, must, must turn around recruiting. Good highschool players don’t want to come here, and why should they?

Our program is in a complete state of disarray. It’s a tailspan that will take years to recover from.

It’s going to take more than one season to right the ship.

Blaming injuries is a little bit of crying, but also a legit point for the failure this year. Even with all those front line players injured the team could easily be 7-2 with a bit of luck going the Irish way. I also think that Rees could be a breath of fresh air for the offense, Crist never seemed comfortable and struggled with accuracy. (The QB battle in 2011 should be interesting.)
I keep trying to talk myself out of the Kelly era, but I just can’t. The dude walks the walk, I like his confidence even if I didn’t agree with the last play call. There are a lot of mistakes, but at least the team is playing hard. This season might be a throw away, but I think it is just the start of something that might not be great, but at least will be good, and I will take good right now.

That makes sense – I hadn’t heard about Spond and Shembo’s injuries but I was wondering why the heck B. Smith was playing ILB again. Even though it feels a bit like a crying game, we definitely would have taken at least the Tulsa game and maybe one more if we had a full hand.
I’m wondering: who do you think we might get back before Utah? Calabrese, Riddick…? It will be another long game if we can’t get a few guys back.
