Actually Notre Dame played Miami in the Japan Bowl in 1979.

let’s hope this game is on espn2 or abc…the espn ticker did not show what channel the game would be on, but showed another bowl game on the same day and time to be played on espn

This will be a great opportunity to see how well we stack up to a fast, deep, and athletic team. They are riding in on a 2 game losing streak – we are on a 3 game winning streak. The only solid comparison is sharing Pitt as an opponent – which isn’t really that solid since the games for both were early on in the season. The put a beat on Pitt on the road while ND struggled at home with the Panthers. Since then, though, the Irish defense has forged an identity while their head coach has been fired. All signs point to a rekindling of a once great and (sometimes not so) proud rivalry. Here’s to hoping they can’t coax Jimmy Johnson out of retirement!!

Not only that, but the Sun Bowl is late enough (Dec 31) to allow the Irish to use most if not all the allotted practices — which as we’ve been hearing is a big bonus for a team like ND who has a lot of young talent.

Plus, the Sun Bowl actually has a history. Unlike the Little Ceasars Bowl or the Fight Hunger Bowl (seriously?) the Sun Bowl is actually one of the oldest games — 77 years.

All things considered I don’t see how things could have worked out better. They get to play in warm weather, comparable payout to their only bowl tie-in, and in a very winnable game against a rival, and keep the Champs Sports Bowl a possibility for the next few seasons. All we have to hope for now is a strong performance to sway a few more big recruits for this class and no injuries for next season. I can’t wait for New Years Eve.
