Irish’s 2011 schedule shaping into primetime affair

May 11, 2011, 2:00 PM EDT

Andrew Luck

News broke yesterday that Notre Dame’s final game of the season, a highly-anticipated date with Stanford in Palo Alto after Thanksgiving, will be played in primetime, televised on either ABC, ESPN or ESPN2.

That pushes the Irish slate to four primetime games, with the kickoff against Pittsburgh still to be determined and likely another evening affair. The Irish will play Michigan in Ann Arbor’s first night game, USC in Notre Dame’s first evening engagement in over two decades, Maryland in primetime at FedEx Field in the nation’s capital, and now the Saturday night after Thanksgiving in Palo Alto. Kickoffs against Purdue and Wake Forest are still to be announced, and there’s a decent chance one of those games could be played in the evening as well.

Here’s Notre Dame’s 2011 schedule:
(Home games in CAPS, all times Eastern)

Sept. 3: SOUTH FLORIDA (NBC) 3:30 p.m.
Sept. 10: at Michigan (ABC) 8:00 p.m.
Sept. 17: MICHIGAN STATE (NBC) 3:30 p.m.
Sept. 24: at Pittsburgh, TBA
Oct. 1: at Purdue, TBA
Oct. 8: AIR FORCE (NBC), 3:30 p.m.
Oct 22: USC (NBC) 7:30 p.m.
Oct 29: NAVY (NBC) 3:30 p.m.
Nov. 5: at Wake Forest, TBA
Nov. 12: vs. Maryland (NBC) 7:30 p.m.
Nov. 19: BOSTON COLLEGE (NBC) 4:00 p.m.
Nov. 26: at Stanford (ABC/ESPN) 8:00 p.m.

Boy….not bad for a team with no relevancy anymore !!

Needless to say this will further accelerate the program, image and recruiting etc.

Kelly is so the right guy at the most needed time.

This schedule kills me. There are plenty of lose-able games on here. On the other hand, every one of them is win-able.

Almost no gimmes. It will make for an exciting season, especially if the Irish come through and win, win, win.

I hope the Wake game is on TV.

I would expect someone to pick it up, especially if ND is having a stellar year.

The Pitt game will more likely than not be a Noon start. The Pirates have their annual fan appreciation night/fireworks scheduled for that night and have been more than reluctant to change; given the proximity of the stadiums and the lack of parking expect an early start and not primetime.

would like to hope that’s not gonna be the time… never liked the early games as well, the build up is always better with a 3:30 or later start. 2:30 is even a little early for me 3 o’clock or later i guess just sounds ND to me!!

Yeah – those noon games become breakfast games here on the west coast. YUCH!!!!!!!!

on May 12th it was announced that Purdue will be a night game 8PM start on ABC/ESPN. Also both Pitt and Wake Forest are discussing night games for this year. Five already is too many, seven would be insane. GO IRISH!!!
