An inside look at The Gug

Nov 2, 2011, 3:29 PM EDT

For everyone that’s wondered what’s inside The Guglielmino Athletics Complex — better known as The Gug — our friends over at UND.com gave us an incredible all-access tour, with seniors Brandon Newman and Mike Golic acting as our tour guides.

For a long time, the Irish football program was behind the times when it came to facilities. One look at this video lets you know that’s far from the case right now.

With Heisman Trophies and national championship trophies on display, The Gug acts as both a shrine to the Irish’s football history, as well as the nerve center of the football program.

There’s plenty to love about this video, with Louis Nix probably stealing the show. Have a look and enjoy.

Great access to something I’ve heard alot about, but never seen.

Amazing facilities. Need to add to that rich tradition….soon !

This was an incredible inside look. Has to make recruiting sooo much easier. Imagine what Holtz could have done if his guys were getting crab legs and massages.

Jaw-dropping. Notre Dame absolutely nailed it with The Gug.

    Wow. Amazing.

Back in the late 1980s, the “nerve center” of the football program was…

well it’s hard to say that there really WAS a nerve center. Everything was housed in the ACC. But no fancy display rooms, no state of the art training room, no fancy lounge, and training table…well training table was just an extension of dinner at the South Dining Hall.

I’d heard about that place but never seen inside. Impressive.

When you stack all this on top of the tradition, and the history and the spirit of ND, it isn’t hard to see why so many recruits come away gushing.

I could kick myself. I was in town a few months ago to visit family and go to a Cubs game with my son. We spent hours at ND walking around the campus (getting kicked out of the practice field), and even had lunch at Legends. I wished I had known about the Gug. It would have way to cool to see the Heisman’s and the National Championship trophies. My son has been a Irish fan because of me. I think seeing those trophies would have put things in prospective for him. Note to self, next time in SB check out the Gug.

Does anyone know if they allow visitors in the trophy room?

      msmmh,

The Heisman’s at the Gug are actually replicas. The original ones are upstairs in the Joyce Center in Heritage Hall, where they always have been.

Bowl trophies and a bunch of others, all except the crystal football from 88, apparently.

Check it out next time you’re on campus. Open almost all of the time.

What an amazing facility! When you think back to the days of Ara and even Lou, it is also amazing what those coaches were able to accompolish with the facilities that they had to work with.
