Irish pick up cornerback pledge in Devin Butler

Apr 4, 2012, 12:37 PM EDT

Devin Butler

With cornerback a pressing need in this year’s recruiting class, the Irish received good news this morning with the commitment of Washington D.C. cornerback Devin Butler. Butler, a six-foot-one, 180-pound national target had offers from Penn State, Michigan, Nebraska, North Carolina, Wisconsin and over a dozen others before being committing to Notre Dame.

“There was just no waiting,” Butler told Rivals’ Mike Farrell. “There was no point. I knew I felt that comfort level I wanted. Growing up in Catholic schools, Notre Dame feels a lot like home to me and reminds me of my school. You know that feeling when you get it and that’s what happened to me.”

Butler joins New Jersey’s Rashad Kinlaw as potential cornerbacks in this recruiting class. Both have excellent height and length, as the Irish try and recruit bigger, physical cornerbacks for Bob Diaco’s system. He was recruited by tight ends coach Scott Booker, who has done some nice early work for the Irish on 2013 targets.

Butler wasn’t expected to announce his decision until mid-May, but after a whirlwind tour of campus that included Penn State, Michigan, Wisconsin and Notre Dame, Butler cut his decision date over a month short, with the cornerback rumored to have committed to Irish coaches on the spot. Butler’s official commitment wrapped up a spring that saw the scholarship offers continue to pile up for one of Washington D.C.’s finest athletes.

“I knew he was very good, but I didn’t realize [it would be like this], even Alabama called,” high school coach Aaron Brady told the Washington Post. “There are not a lot of corners in this class and he’s 6-1 and can run. There are not a lot of 6-1 corners out there. Most guys who are 6-1 and they can catch, they want to play offense.”

The commitment takes the Irish recruiting class to 10 members. They’ll look to double that number by Signing Day next February, with the potential to take one or two past that number depending on scholarship numbers.

Sweeet. What’s his foty time? How many stars is he? One thing to note here is that its nice to see Booker gettin involved here because anyday now Alford will be gone Im sure.

Nice to see ND finally listening to me and hiring more minority coaches.

    • seeeye - Apr 4, 2012 at 12:53 PM

      OFD reports 6-1 and a 4.54 40.

Given typical recruiting inflation, he probably stands 5-11.5 or 6-even and runs a 4.6.

    • irishbornraised - Apr 5, 2012 at 1:04 AM

really 15 thumbs down? what did he say?

  3. dickasman - Apr 4, 2012 at 2:34 PM

I’d like us to sign another 5 star stud on the DL. One way or the other, I have a feeling that I don’t think Aaron Lynch will be around for 4 years.

    • kansasirish - Apr 4, 2012 at 4:47 PM

Just read on the Bleacher Report that Lynch was absent from practice today due to a fight with Tate Nichols during practice on Saturday…….Interesting.

      • jerseyshorendfan1 - Apr 4, 2012 at 5:48 PM

Was it a disciplinary thing or an injury? Was Nichols at practice? I wonder who won the fight? C’mon man need the 411.

      • kansasirish - Apr 4, 2012 at 5:51 PM

From reading the article it appears to be disciplinary and didn’t say that Nichols was absent from practice.

      • bernhtp - Apr 4, 2012 at 7:07 PM

Kelly said it was for personal reasons. Given Lynch situation, I bet it is girlfriend related.

Half of another comment section WASTED thanks to a couple of dude’s egos getting the best of them…again.

    Flippin’ A, man.

    • fentocamarillo - Apr 4, 2012 at 3:42 PM

Agreed. I have been an avid follower of this site and my congrats to Keith for superb work….look forward to it everyday. Thought I should try my hand at this blogging stuff. Former domer and late 70’s grad. Had my share of gridiron glory, but only at the H.S. level in California. From what I have been reading, makes me more than qualified to offer better opinions than some of the absurdity recently posted. Look forward to talking football and football only!

      Go Irish!

      • domer77blowsgoats - Apr 4, 2012 at 3:56 PM

        blarney and CA-FENTO

        Flippin’ A Cotton is right

Would much rather just talk football

hard to ignore idiocracy when it keeps smacking you in the face…

      • Robert the Bob - Apr 4, 2012 at 5:17 PM

Try harder. Until right now I’ve had no problem ignoring you.

    • Keith Arnold - Apr 4, 2012 at 7:03 PM

      I AGREE.

Nude, if you can’t play nice, go away. Just about everybody else has figured it out but you.

I’ll miss the positives you bring to these comments, but I’ll get over it.

      • irishbornraised - Apr 5, 2012 at 1:07 AM

Other than nude’s opinions on rees, which are fair and his opinions, he’s really not that bad. I mean, when QB play doomed a team, it’s fair to spend alot of time talking about QB play, I’d like to think that if I said what Nude said about TR, but instead about EG, I would be respected

      • nudeman - Apr 5, 2012 at 10:04 AM

I don’t take anything that goes on here too seriously, so if I need to moderate or reduce my posting or stop entirely, life will go on for me and all of us.

An observation: You’ve let this goat guy go on for quite literally months with multiple IDs, coming on here for the sole purpose of ripping me. No football talk, no back and forth about a game/player/coach, etc. He was obsessed to a clinical extent with my posts. His very name “domerblowsgoats” is offensive. Now that he’s toned it down he pretends to be a cheerleader, as if anyone takes that seriously, but always manages to slip in a shot at me, unprovoked. Why is that OK?

I think you’re harder on me because I’ve disagreed with you on a few occasions, most recently with the issue over Rees’ deep ball ability. Important to note that most here agreed with me and thought you were off base on that one. (Though I did interpret the word “rising” incorrectly, and apologized).

So is there a double standard here?
Do you just want “yes men” on the board?

Let me know and I’ll take my talents to the proverbial South Beach. Better looking women there anyway.

      • andy44teg - Apr 5, 2012 at 11:15 AM

I really wasn’t going to say anything about what’s going on here, but i figured..what the hell…
Nudeman is 100% correct when it comes to domerblowsgoats. He comes on here with mulitple names and tries to just piss people off. Whoever was the first guy you censored, his name was similar to someone else’s name, i can’t remember which, just posted that one to piss people off, too, including myself. The post by “nudemon” on here was written for no other reason than to bait “nudeman” into a pissing contest. It’s stupid, childish, and whatever else you can think of, to use multiple id’s for the sole purpose of pissing with people, and i would say that needs to stop more than anything else that goes on here. How would you like it if someone posted as Keith Arnald, and just said stupid stuff to mess with you? Get rid of that and you’ll get rid of 99% of the bickering on here.

      • domer77blowsgoats - Apr 5, 2012 at 1:29 PM

Thank you for your observations and taking the time to comment.

As I’ve stated numerous times – I have been on this board supporting ND years with nothing but football posts before either of you showed up.

Yes I do call out people (person) when warranted, sometimes to a fault, because there is no reason to post some of these things, case in point see Nude’s eloquent post re: Lynch below at 11:24am.

I am all for keeping it to football and have done so since the “Rome Rules” have been enforced only to get blasted by said Nude.

I’ve turned the corner, so can you too Nude or are you South Beach bound? I bet your “hood” comments will fit in nicely done there…

      • nudeman - Apr 5, 2012 at 2:31 PM

YOU have turned the corner? You couldn’t get through this one message without taking a shot. Seriously … you kept a straight face when you wrote that?

  5. hotlantalaw - Apr 4, 2012 at 4:03 PM

    Fantastic! Welcome aboard!

  6. jerseyshorendfan1 - Apr 4, 2012 at 5:53 PM

Things are trending upward at corner it would appear. I like the profile of these guys, a little bigger, more rangy with some speed and the piece de resistance is Kinlaw is a Jersey guy.

  7. 10of14 - Apr 4, 2012 at 9:50 PM

Lynch is one of those “risk/reward” kids. He is a stud that could be the nation’s best, but may end up out of the ND family due to his aggressive behavior. I hope that he can find a mentor that can balance his behavior…not warm and fuzzy about his future yet.

    • nudeman - Apr 5, 2012 at 11:24 AM

Lynch will be fine. A very emotional kid and more of an “in the hood with my homies” type than most at ND. So the environment is a stretch for him. Having said that, he recently pulled a 3.0 GPA so he’s proven he can hack it.

Other thing is, regarding his apparent fierce attachment to his girlfriend, Lynch comes from a single parent home. I don’t know everything that’s gone into that, but it’s not unusual for that type of kid to be looking a little harder than most for some love and attention.

  8. gtizzo - Apr 5, 2012 at 8:01 PM

Lots of hate and discontent in the comments these days. People calm down not every thing ends in transfer or being dismissed from the team. Lynch will be fine, just let the kid work it out. It is possible to make a point without being crude or insulting. Make your point and back it up with facts no need to be rude. Nice add on the recruiting trail more help will be needed but it is a start. People I’m sure Keith doesn’t want to edit posts, he is looking to get a feel for what ND fans are thinking and feeling. The more good posts the more Keith can feed us information in articles when possible. Everyone take a deep breath…it is only April…I hate to see you in September. ND fans are best in college football!!!

  9. Keith Arnold - Apr 5, 2012 at 10:58 PM

The last thing I want to do is edit comments. Heck, I don’t even like reading them when they consist of sniping at each other. I haven’t spent enough time digging into the facts to learn if somebody has more than one handle on here. If they do, please stop. That’s lame.

That said — The rules were instituted to start fresh. I’m not holding anyone to their past comments. The past was the past and I’m starting fresh. Period. Nude, you may feel like I’m picking on you. It’s not that you’ve challenged my opinion, I enjoy that and if you have ever spent any time in a live-blog, I always engage with people that have a different opinion on me. It’s just that you’re smart enough to know how you’re trying to subtly push buttons and I’m smart enough to know it too. So stop. It’s not just you, but stop.

But my main issue is one of time. It is scarce and I’ve got a lot to do between this blog and my other professional obligations that put food on the table and monitoring these comments take too much time and keep me from doing the work that my employers pay me to do. So if it means losing one commenter because they feel picked on, I’ll wish you the best as you go on your merry way.

There are thousands of readers here every day. I value all of them the same. And if a small handful of people are causing problems in the comments section and making this a less enjoyable place for the thousands that read and don’t comment, well I’m siding with the people that are in the silent majority.

Just play nice. If you wouldn’t write it with your real name attributed to it, don’t write it here. If you wouldn’t say it to your boss or your mom, don’t say it here. The best comments/blogs are where the hive mind feeds the host. Make me better at my job. We will all benefit from it, especially as we go into an interesting offseason.
