I agree with your comment that if you have four quarterbacks, you have no quarterbacks. That is absolutely the case. But, I disagree with everything else. Kelly will find the right quarterback. Period. It won't be just before the Navy game. He knows he needs to have a starter and he needs to stay with the starter. And the best scenario is to find the starter by mid-August and to stay with that starter throughout 2012. That may be AH. He is very talented, has a great arm and can lead an offense. It may be EG, who has a very strong arm and could double as a back in an option format. Kiel, obviously, has a tremendous arm and would offer a more traditional qb look than either AH or EG. . . . And let's not rule out last year's starter, no matter how much he struggled with his performance (on and off the field).

A team with no QB, toughest schedule in the country, and playing five teams in the top 18 in the polls is not going to win 9 games in the regular season. People are kidding themselves if they think that will happen at ND this season.

Some say it's an easy start to the season? Playing a team week one that has beaten ND 3 of the last 5 games and in another country no less, after jet lag, then coming home to play Purdue is not easy especially after we thought ND would blow out usf last year. Amazing people are buying into the delusion of grandeur. Let's all realize it's not all peaches and cream at ND, yet.

Remember what Lou Holtz said three years ago about Ohio State playing Navy week one? He thought it was bad scheduling and it's really difficult to prepare all fall camp for those cut blocks and truly be ready out if the gate. Ohio State almost lost that game.

ohio,

Did you read my entire first response on Amir? I was stating that's why he hasn't played much, is because he is always injured. Look a little closer.

Heart attack? I think I'm the only ND fan that won't have one because I just sit back and watch now. I already know the season will be bad. I'm trying to get the rest of you prepped so you don't jump off a building. This team doesnt have one good option at QB. This isn't 07 bad or even 03 bad but there is a reason why Kelly is shooting for 8 wins this season. Mark it down it will be another 8-5 season after the bowl game IFFFF CBK doesn't make more bone head Tulsa, scUM, usf decisions.

idratherbe, now you are seeing what you want to see... you are now actively looking for some Tommy love.

Go back and read my posts. I am hardly claiming to know more than BK; but I have seen enough of TR to know where the ceiling is. If we have to start TR in one more game barring injuries to the real starter, BK is not the coach we thought he was (hardly likely. He earned his reputation through consistent performance and success over a long period of time).

I am pretty confident that, regardless of what he is saying to the media, he knows who his QB is (someone not named Tommy) for the season and he will most certainly have that guy ready by the start of the season. Will he play lights out from game 1, we will have to wait and see...

@idratherbe, Where do you see the latent talent that will bring about this "MARKED IMPROVEMENT"? How does TR compare with any of the names you threw up there? Does he even have the physical attributes to be a D-1 QB? Why do you keep bringing up the 2nd to 3rd year rubbish? Why doesn't it include TR's fumbles, sacks and negative yardage numbers?

One last question - is your last name, by any chance, Rees?

You missed my point. I knew Russell was moved, but there was previously a murmur that Davonte Neal was going to be the one moved. Neal had considerable HS experience at CB and he is the closest thing we have to a lock-down CB recruit, but apparently Davonte and/or the coaching staff decided his highest value would be on offense. despite the need.

FNC111 Amir didn't play in the spring because of an ankle injury that required surgery. We are not going to go 7-5 unless we have a complete meltdown. For the first time in awhile we will start out with an easier schedule. We don't start with the Michigan's until week 3. That gives either EG or AH 2 weeks to build confidence and get game experience. There will be mistakes with a young QB but I have faith in our defense (front 7). I think 9-3/8-4 worst case. Give the team a chance! Relax and try to enjoy fall camp. Save the heart attack or stroke until the shi*hits the fan.

I've been trying to warn people all off season that this will be a non stop turnover fest of a season again. When you have four QBs you have zero QBs. I just don't see anyone but Giel being the answer and he isn't the answer until 2013. The loss in the second game of the year last season set this program back a couple of years in my opinion. Too many issues with the offense and an unreal schedule. All I'm praying for is 7-5 and beat scUM!

idratherbe

The 2nd to 3rd year thing is a great example of how stats lie.
Absolutely every one of the guys you list was a known NFL quality talent
No one is saying that about Rees.

Here's another one for you: Ron Powlus
If I wanted to spend my day in front of the pc, I'd pull up his stats.
My recollection is that he had a promising 1st year; maybe an OK 2nd year; then got a little worse each of the next 2 years
It's not unheard of and I'm sure I could come up with others

Do I see what I want to see? Dunno. But here IS what I've SEEN so far:
An immobile, turnover prone QB with a weak arm and a penchant for just KILLING the team with interceptions and making bad decisions; often exhibits an immature, petulant and entitled attitude when dealing with media

Will he improve? Hardly guaranteed
He clearly got a little worse last year with each game.
The trajectory is bad, and his physical limitations make improvement doubtful

Reese has had his chance!! If there's anyone within 5yds of him it's a sack. Throwing screen passes backwards!! With the schedule we have I'de rather see EG or Hendricks at least give us a chance if the play breaks down. Remember Floyd is not around to bail out TR by catching all his 50/50 passes. At this point even im so desperate for W's i wouldn't care if it's Gunner. On a positive note I think we beat ourselves in almost every game last yr and things can only get better even with the schedule. Am I nuts or just loyal can we win 9 games this yr??

Are you my wife, secretly posting on these boards. When i tell my wife i'm going golfing and then come back 4 hours later, she asks "Where have you been?"

When i say "MARKED IMPROVEMENT", you interpret "monster year may be coming"

I'm not saying the kid will be better, will be great, will be worse, will be the greatest, etc.

I'm just saying, HAVE A FREAKIN OPEN MIND ABOUT IT!

Judging from BK's comments, he's got a 25% chance of getting the job..same as the rest of them.

So, if he gets the job, are you gonna burn all of your Irish gear and start cheering for Purdue or UM or USC? Or will you be the narrow-minded parent that sits in the stands and says "my kid is better than that kid, i don't know why he gets to start." Or will you shut your pie-hole and support a team that includes Tommy as QB.

JUST SAYIN!

Punctuation is critical to relaying the written word.

You're right that Tommy isn't a fair comparison to any of the people on the list. But you're comparing the people on that list today to Tommy today.

Compare the people on that list as sophomores to Tommy as a sophomore. NONE of them were first round picks or super bowl champs after their sophomore year....and the moment you throw a "5-star recruit" argument in, i just stop listening.

" Nobody knocks Tommy’s knowledge"

I do

Go look at this site (http://www.subwaydomer.com/2012-articles/august/tommy-rees-caught-on-tape-part-ii.html) where they have a very fair and thorough analysis of his decisions
It's not all bad; some good pre-snap reads
But that good is outweighed by his bone crushing stupidity post-snap

Of particular note is the analysis of the final INT against FSU
Here a QB just HAS TO KNOW the game situation
Down by 4, 2+ minutes left, 1st down at the FSU 30 or so
Zero reason to take any chances on that snap.
Throw it in the seats, take a sack, quick kick it, do ANYTHING but turn it over
So he throws to a double covered Goodman for an easy red zone INT
Game over

Where's the "knowledge"?

Am I making too much of one play?
If it was just one play, yes. But we saw that over and over and over in 2011
He's terrible

By now I assume many of you have listened to or read BK's presser yesterday.
I was SHOCKED when I read this (paraphrasing):
"If one of the QBs plays really well against Navy, we'll have a tough decision to make in week 2"

WTF?

That tells me that all this stuff about Rees starting at the bottom is BS.
Unless Golson and/or AH (or GK?) lights it up in Dublin, the paperboy will be back on his route, throwing the papers in the bushes against Purdue.

What other way is there to interpret that?

Tommy Rees is like a horror movie it appears. You think it is gone, think it is killed, think everything is going to be okay and then.......WHAM aaaaaiiiiggghhh there goes the horror again.

Love the DeBerg comparison, very accurate. Comparing stats not too compelling, because what were the situations/dynamics involved ? Those other guys were probably trying to win the game in the final minutes etc etc I would like to see the positive plays made by each QB listed and compared for impact and effect. Then compare and contrast, Rees wouldn't stand a chance.

Amir will be dynamic and keep in mind, put something just as good in the mix and everybody gets better ! Cierre will take it to another level, the offensive line takes it up next thing you know..

All those converted players to the secondary, funny I think I remember something similar happening in Coach Kelly's previous stops....worked out fairly well as I remember.

Production folks, that simple, Golson or Hendrix, whomever starts if they produce then the "Nightmare on Rockne Street" won't reappear....fail to produce and....don't say I told you so.

GO Irish !

Defeat Navy !

See you in Dublin on 20 Bridge Street Lower, Dublin 8

Rees will be staying home for the Navy game. As of right now he is #4 QB.

That means that right now BK is looking for a starter for that game.

More important - he is looking for one of the three to SEIZE the job. If none of the three does that we're pretty much back where we started. IMO you can't really blame Kelly.

One of the prime requisites for the QB position, especially at Notre Dame, is leadership. The guy who comes on the field and his teammates perk up because they are willing to follow him.
