Signing Day is near

Feb 4, 2013, 4:21 PM EDT

Fax Machine

With less than 48 hours until Signing Day, there’s little more any coaching staff can do. With a recruiting dead period upon us, coaches will return to campus around the country and wait for the fax machine. Sure, there’ll be last minute phone calls and texts, but the majority of work has been completed. It’s now down to a waiting game.

For the Notre Dame coaching staff, Wednesday will be the celebration of a recruiting class that’s the best of the modern recruiting era. With a group high on star power as well as positional needs, Brian Kelly and his coaching staff continue to show the ability to find players that fit the mold they have created. They also show in this recruiting class the ability to be flexible, bringing elite athletes onto campus with multi-positional versatility. That’s easy when you find and identify a blue-chip, five-star talent like Jaylon Smith. But it’s also on display with below-the-radar defensive back Rashad Kinlaw, a high school quarterback that’s battled injuries the last two seasons.

Over the next three days, the focus will be almost entirely on the 2013 recruiting class. We’ll be live-blogging from campus starting at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, keeping you up-to-date in real time on the recruiting class as the faxes come in. We’ll also be joining the official broadcast to discuss the impact of this recruiting class. So if you’re looking forward to seeing a sleep-deprived writer three time zones away from his home base, you are in luck.

Last year, Notre Dame was on the wrong side of a few Signing Day surprises, drawing the short end of the stick on two blue-chip prospects that had Irish fans flinching for fear that the sky was falling. But even without Deontay Greenberry and Brian Poole, things seemed to work out okay for the team in 2012. (Some context, Poole — a five-star cornerback, made three tackles for Florida this season. Greenberry caught three touchdowns for Houston.) Wednesday, they’ll be in the running to spring their own surprises, with a small handful of recruits still considering the Irish, including big fish like Eddie Vanderdoes, Ty Isaac, and Kylie Fitts.

Wednesday will feel like Christmas morning for a lot of die hard college football fans out there. But here’s a friendly reminder that’ll likely go ignored in the heat of the moment: Just because you’ve known about some of the presents beneath the tree for ten months, it doesn’t make them any less valuable than the surprises that may roll in that morning.

So buckle up for a fun few days. If only because it’s the triumphant return of the fax machine, forcing its way out of irrelevancy for a few short hours each February.

    Go Irish!

    • dickasman - Feb 4, 2013 at 7:21 PM

We ain’t going nowhere without entirely new punt return team including the coach!

  2. dudeacow - Feb 4, 2013 at 5:37 PM

List in order of how excited I am for the recruits coming in:

    Tarean Folston (Cierre Wood 2.0)
Torii Hunter Jr. (Davaris Daniels with more upside [in my opinion])
Malik Zaire (Elite 11 trainer likes him better than Golson and Kiel)
    Durham Smythe (Tyler who?)
Corey Robinson (really tall with good routes and speed)
Greg Bryant (just like Riddick… placed behind Wood [Folston])
Steve Elmer (Lombard’s understudy who may eventually unseat him)
Mike Hueurman (don’t get comfortable, Smythe)
Hunter Bivin (no. 4 OT according to 247)
Colin McGovern (just keep piling on more than capable backups–well, backups for a time)
Mike McGlinchy (6″ 9′? heck yes)
    James Onwualu (made you miss)
    Will Fuller (like Toma… underrated)
    John Montelus (no. 2 OG)

Jaylon Smith (covers like a corner, rushes like a DE, flips burgers like a–wait, I don’t think we’ll need that skill)
Max Redfield (first 5star safety? I’ll take it)
Rashad Kinlaw (dude runs a legit 4.3 40–check out his film sometime)
Cole Luke (will Jackson leave a big hole? nope)
    Michael Deeb (big necked thumper)
Isaac Rochell (just cause Day got there a year earlier doesn’t mean he gets the starting job)
Devin Butler (diamond in the rough)
Doug Randolph (better step up your play, Ishaq)
    Jacob Matuska (great, great depth)

Andrew Antognoli (that was a tough one)

Jaylon Smith (was that really a question?)

      Nice write-up. Appreciate the insight.

So why does no one question the use of the fax machine? Why not an email or a webform? ND has some pretty robust IT. Why use those infernal devices?

    • dickasman - Feb 4, 2013 at 7:36 PM

Because internet is not reliable. Sht goes down constantly. Servers crash constantly. Plus we don’t wanna get focking hoasxed again!

You can always rely on the good ol reliable. Latest and the greatest is not always greatest. My $2000 stupid smart tv loses wifi constantly.

    • bernhtp - Feb 4, 2013 at 8:10 PM

The fax is always accompanied by a phone call for confirmation. Fax is used because it has been for a long time. Tradition.

      • mimefrog - Feb 4, 2013 at 8:39 PM

I guess I just have a personal, enduring hatred of the fax machine.

It is amazing how bad our punt return team has been. Thank God our punt returner is so athletic, he is normally able to recover his own fumbles.

ND really needs D Line help, anyone heard news on Vanderdoes??

    Go Irish!!

    • bernhtp - Feb 4, 2013 at 8:25 PM

There is no news on Vanderdoes until there is news, which is apparently on Wed night. I hope he tells the staff(s) long ahead of the public announcement so they can go to Plan B.

      • nudeman - Feb 4, 2013 at 9:06 PM

Come on … I had to re-read that post to make sure it was from you. Very un-bern like.

Any Plan B that is put into action at the 11th hour and 59th minute is more like a Plan D or F.
The Irish don’t have some stud player who they’re holding off on in the event EV doesn’t sign.
Basically it’s EV or bust; and if he doesn’t sign with ND, I guess it just means they can offer a 5th year to a few more guys (or a 6th year in the case of Slaughter

I’ve never felt like Vanderdoes is coming to ND. UCLA all the way, IMO
Same with Fitts. At one point I felt differently about him, but he’s apparently been creaming all over himself lately with his tweets about what a great place UCLA is

Hope I’m wrong on both. And if so, what a great way to get a jump on another thumbs down title in 2013

      • bernhtp - Feb 4, 2013 at 9:16 PM

The coaching staff probably has a pretty good idea where V is going, but we don’t and won’t.

If the staff doesn’t know with high confidence, they will likely hold a place for him. I wouldn’t be surprised to see some last minute gamesmanship, if necessary, for V given his great importance. That was my only point.

      • nudeman - Feb 4, 2013 at 9:34 PM

There is no scenario where ND says to EV “Sorry man; the bus is full”

If they sign their 85th scholarship player before EV announces, they’d find a way
If he waits until 10 EST on Wed and calls and says I’m”, then he’d be in
If he said “I want to think about this for another month” they’d let him
If he called in July and said “I’m in”, then he’d be in

        Apparently he’s THAT good.

  5. rcali - Feb 4, 2013 at 9:47 PM

Let us hope these guys all have real girlfriends.

      • 1historian - Feb 5, 2013 at 2:53 PM

Not only enough – MORE than enough.

        MUCH more

  6. irishdodger - Feb 4, 2013 at 10:31 PM

Fitts is expected to sign with SC. Even after they screwed him over, he’s taking his old girlfriend back. He visited there over the weekend & is expected to announce for them on Wed.

    • nudeman - Feb 4, 2013 at 10:47 PM

      Uh …. wrong.
Every other site has him going to UCLA and already having informed ND and USC.

  8. cpfirish - Feb 5, 2013 at 3:30 AM

Just watched a highlight video of Kinlaw! Wow! This kid has great speed!! So what did ND recruit him as? Defense? Cause we are pretty deep at QB..

  9. fnc111 - Feb 5, 2013 at 12:51 PM

ND isn’t adding anyone else but expect at least one LOI that was supposed to go NDs way go to another school.

Ty Isaac has zero interest in ND.

    • nudeman - Feb 5, 2013 at 4:21 PM

On the alleged LOI going the other direction, please elaborate.
However … I seriously doubt you have any inside info, so am inclined to believe you’re just flaming.

Ty Isaac … correct. Was never interested in ND.

    • mayo1010 - Feb 9, 2013 at 10:27 PM

      wrong as usual fnc111!
