Early Enrollees: Corey Robinson

Feb 5, 2013, 4:35 PM EDT

Corey Robinson

With an athletic pedigree that is hard to ignore, Corey Robinson, son of NBA Hall of Famer David Robinson, walks onto campus as one of the more intriguing developmental projects in recent memory. Late to the sport of football, Notre Dame was one of the first schools to identify Robinson as a player, and it looks like they may have found a good one. Still growing at 6-foot-5, Robinson is learning as he goes, a dangerous proposition for future red zone defenders.

COREY ROBINSON
San Antonio, Texas

Measureables: 6-foot-5, 200-pounds
Accolades: First-team Division II All-State Texas private schools. First-team All-San Antonio. U.S. Army All-American, Texas All-State Academic Team. National Merit Scholarship. Four-stars Rivals, Scout.
Impressive offers: Iowa, Kansas, North Carolina, Wake Forest
Projected position: Wide receiver

Quick Take: Raw football player that’s quickly learning the game. Progress from junior to senior season was immense, and he held his own at Army All-American game, earning rave reviews. Athletic enough to be a wide receiver, yet has size and build to become power player. Evolutionary wide receiver, fits the changing mold for receivers with power and size. For Notre Dame, gives the Irish a red zone weapon, counters any issues that come with field shrinking by the goal line.

Pedigree of Hall of Fame father brings professionalism to locker room. Notre Dame first elite school to identify Robinson, with recruitment wrapped up in short order. Staff believes that Robinson will be able to play a physical brand of football, meaning that he’ll need to put a lot of weight on his lanky frame. He has a long way to go, but a gamble worth taking, and the extra semester on campus will help.

What it means for the Irish roster: If the Irish receiving corps lacked a certain body type since Michael Floyd graduated, Robinson certainly gives Notre Dame that jump ball threat. The recruiting product of a staff that’s used to unearthing diamonds, Robinson will be an interesting case study. One look at his other scholarship offers, it’s clear that Notre Dame saw something that many other elite programs didn’t. Yet Robinson’s ascent up the recruiting rankings after his performance at the Army game, not to mention a senior season with 20 touchdowns and 1,400 yards, has you wondering whether or not the Irish just found a tremendous sleeper.

Obligatory YouTube highlight tape: There doesn’t look to be much on YouTube for Corey, but here is a great link to his Hudl highlights that show you some of his senior season. But in honor of the Admiral, here is a great clip of Corey’s father scoring 71 points against the Clippers.
