The first five members of the heralded 2013 recruiting class are already on campus. Let’s take a look at the five freshmen that are already enrolled in classes and will participate in spring practice next month.
Measureables: 6-foot-6, 305-pounds
Impressive Offers: Michigan, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Stanford
Accolades: No. 60 player in Rivals100, No. 136 on 247Sports. AP Michigan high school player of the year. Anthony Munoz Award as top lineman at US Army All-American Bowl. Two-time All-State Detroit News.
Projected position: Left tackle
Quick Take: Elmer is one of the crown jewels of the recruiting class. Physically impressive, he is one of the elite offensive line recruits Notre Dame has signed in the modern recruiting era. (Now he’ll need to play to his recruiting ranking, something that Sam Young and Trevor Robinson didn’t necessarily do.)
Short offer list only because of his early commitment to Notre Dame. Made a ton of improvement from junior to senior season, as evidenced by his impressive performance down at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Physically mature, could work his way into the two-deep during spring practice. Looks every bit his current height and weight, and there’s still plenty of room to build on his frame, without limiting his athleticism. Staff loves his combination of size, toughness, athleticism and smarts.
What it means for the Irish roster: If you had to guess, Elmer is Zack Martin’s heir apparent. Of the five offensive line recruits Notre Dame signed, Elmer looks like a left tackle prototype. With injuries threatening Tate Nichols career, infusing some depth at tackle was essential. Elmer gives the Irish some immediate help this spring, where numbers will be tricky with injuries and attrition. He’s the perfect recruit: An elite talent at a position of need.
