Max Redfield

Notre Dame just reeled in their third five-star prospect of the day with the official signing of one-time USC commitment Max Redfield. The elite safety has added another intriguing weapon to the defensive arsenal. Let’s take a closer look at what Redfield brings to the table.

Mission Viejo, California

Measureables: 6-foot-2, 181-pounds
Accolades: USA Today All-American. First-team DB on Los Angeles Times All-Star team. Orange County Register’s Player of the Year. Under Armour All-American. Five-star prospect, Rivals, 247, ESPN. South Coast League MVP for Mission Viejo.
Impressive offers: USC, UCLA, Washington, Stanford, Arizona, Nebraska, Oregon
Projected position: Safety

Quick Take: The highest rated defensive back Notre Dame has signed in the modern recruiting era. Elite size for a safety, with speed and athleticism to spare. One of the top prospects in California, Redfield is the best player on one of the best teams in Southern California.

Physically needs to get stronger, but has instincts and nose for the football that are second to none. The top safety on Notre Dame’s recruiting board in 2013. Plays a deep centerfield but likes to initiate contact as well.

What it means for the Irish roster: Notre Dame has flooded the roster with safety talent over the past few recruiting cycles. But they’ve yet to land an athlete of the caliber of Redfield. How he works into the depth chart remains to been seen, but Redfield will certainly find his way onto the field in some way, shape or form.

It’ll be interesting to see how the Irish handle the numbers they now have in the backend of their defense. You’ve got to think that there might be some attrition when people find themselves buried outside of the two-deep.

Obligatory YouTube highlight tape: Here’s a look at the junior highlights from Max Redfield.

Keith – this makes #22 of the 23 commits. What are you hearing about Folston & maybe Vanderdoes?

  2. irishpuma - Feb 6, 2013 at 12:47 PM

Papa Folston has event at 2pm eastern I believe. EV4 has 5pm pacific presser at Placer High. I am starting to have a good feeling about EV based on Keith, and Rivals etc. Coupled with the fact that Alabama just took a few more Defensive lineman which would indicate they are not in the running although they are allowed to sign 50 players every year so who knows. I can’t see UCLA over ND. But thats just me.

Folston’s parents say he is still ND but it makes you wonder. I hope we get them both and this class will be legendary.

I absolutely can not believe the ND media staff was incompetent or pays no attention to detail to put EV4 on the press release. Unbelievable. Hopefully it will not make a difference but just stupidity. Sort of like losing Anzalone by taking pro interviews and not coming clean during a dead period.

Every time I want to believe we are a top notch program some stupid thing happens, manti, swarbrick, kelly, etc.

Oh well part of the suffering I guess. Great class hoping for two more but happy with what we have.

puma – hopefully it doesn’t mean that they already know where he is going – and it aint ND.

puma – thanks for the update – I left that message & went to work – been sweating Folston since. Just got home & there was an email from my brother that he had signed – now we can ALL sweat Eddie together for the next 2 1/2 hours.

Great Great Great news fellas…this class was excellent before hearing about EV, however my only concern BEFORE EV coming along was the lack of depth at DL in this years class. Was hoping we beefed up our rotation a la LSU, BAMA, FLA etc. EV switches this class from great to elite. Might be best ND class of the recruiting era,? Guess a convo to have after 4 great years! Go Irish!

P.S. not to be “insider-recruiting-guy” but was lookin ahead to next years class to see who the household names were. Unfortunately, from a glance it seems as though the blue-chip guys are from regions and states that ND traditionally struggles with: AL, LA, TX and other various southern states. I predict this upcoming year and/or the year after to be the defining years of the Kelly era and the program in general. Fair or unfair, it may have to be BCS or bust. Maybe a bit dramatic or obvious, but we absolutely have to follow up next year (especially in light of the the way year ended).

Leonard Fournette…wow. Prob. not a realistic chance but check out his video on youtube if you haven’t seen it already. Another guy who I saw, that ND is actually in on, RB from N. Carolina Elijah Hood. He’s another man-child.

As long as I’ve been watching ND, I don’t think we’ve ever had a safety with this kind of athleticism. Straight up playmaker, this D is gunna be formidable for years to come, can’t wait to see these guys in action!
