Live Blog — Notre Dame vs. Air Force

Oct 26, 2013, 2:56 PM EDT

TJ Jones AP

As the Irish get set to take on Air Force without Louis Nix anchoring their defensive front, Bob Diaco’s defense is getting a good look at what life will be like in the post-Irish Chocolate era. For now, they’ll be able to slide Stephon Tuitt inside and use senior Kona Schwenke on the interior, but it’s a good test for the young depth on the Irish’s defensive front.

Speaking of young players, freshman Steve Elmer will move into the starting lineup, the first of what looks like many starts for the promising youngster. Elmer had already been spelling Christian Lombard at guard, but it’ll be an interesting challenge for the freshman, who will take on quicker, undersized players the next two weeks.

As usual, we’re here with our friends from Irish Illustrated to chat throughout the game. For some of you, we’ll be your eyes and ears. Stop by, stick around, and chat as the Irish take on the Falcons.

Thanks NotreDameFan, it’s working great. One question; any ideas how to get that huge remote control on the screen turned off or moved out of the way.

Thanks again for the sweet link.

      Go Irish!!

  2. dickasman - Oct 26, 2013 at 4:21 PM

Bernsie, I’m not sure if you’re going to the game today but if you are, take time and take your wife to one of those hot springs and have great crazy wild outdoor sax and work out your differences. She will appreciate it!

    • mtflsmitty - Oct 26, 2013 at 4:37 PM

Dick, I gather you’re retired or semi-retired. What was your profession?

Thank you, Time Warner Cable. They added CBS Sports Network to their digital package October 1st. Hmm…..I wonder what spurned that decision.

    • dickasman - Oct 26, 2013 at 4:29 PM

My guess? I think ted and Les had a reach around meeting and it probably went well.

    • kapnd73 - Oct 26, 2013 at 4:53 PM

Great timing, good for you, ndg&b.
Hmm, “spurned” or “spurred” – fun Freudian slip?

ND is just like the tea party, a national embarrassment to the country.

  9. loadofwash - Oct 26, 2013 at 5:42 PM

ND pitiful defense and lack of team speed is flat out pathetic. Looks like a MAC game.

  10. getsome99 - Oct 26, 2013 at 5:52 PM

There you go Dick! 2 TD’s to 2 true freshman.

    • dickasman - Oct 26, 2013 at 6:44 PM

I know. Now only if we can let the secret out. Somebody tell BK we have nice black athletic qb n RB on the bench.

He UNDERTHREW Robinson and UNDERTHREW koyack. Rees is UNDERTAKER, err THROWER!

      • tucsonfan - Oct 26, 2013 at 8:40 PM

Dickman is there some reason why you inject race into your comments so frequently? Some totally needless reason, just like your stupid sexual innuendos? Grow up or go away finally.

  11. loadofwash - Oct 26, 2013 at 6:08 PM

Someone pls tell the Irish they are play’n a 1-6 team. BK needs to go, what a joke!

    • dickasman - Oct 26, 2013 at 6:45 PM

But Hey he’s preserving the best QB for next year ya know.

  12. getsome99 - Oct 26, 2013 at 6:57 PM

Hope they take some shots downfield to CB2 in the second half. Would like to see him finally get a TD. Thinks Rees can throw it far enough out there for him to outrun the coverage?

  13. getsome99 - Oct 26, 2013 at 6:59 PM

Is Folston healthy? If he is, I think it’s time.

  14. getsome99 - Oct 26, 2013 at 7:03 PM

I’m starting to believe Zaire is a clear project as the plan for next year is for Golson to be back at QB. That puts Zaire on the sideline for at least a guaranteed two years as well early enrollee spring practice work. Sounds like a slot receiver to me.

    • dickasman - Oct 26, 2013 at 7:44 PM

      Zaire is GOD!!!

    • dickasman - Oct 26, 2013 at 7:51 PM

Bob Marley wrote a song about him: Im gonna be Iron, Like a Lion, in Zaire……Iron, Lion in Zaire….Iron Lion Zaire dodododo

    • heartofgoldandblue - Oct 26, 2013 at 8:29 PM

Getsome… Is that a serious thought? You think that by preserving a year of eligibility for Zaire with Golson coming back, he’s a slot just because he would only have two years? Forgive me if I didn’t get the sarcasm but if you’re serious you’re pretty naive of both the talent (as a QB) of Zaire and the process of college QBs. The ideal situation for QBs (which we haven’t had) has a QB start after a couple years of developing behind a legitimate QB.

      • getsome99 - Oct 26, 2013 at 8:34 PM

Lol. Yeah, the last comment was a joke. I think he’s talented, but more raw than we want to believe. Min 2 year project.

  15. getsome99 - Oct 26, 2013 at 7:30 PM

    There it is!

    • dickasman - Oct 26, 2013 at 7:32 PM

Whooomp there it isssss……You called it boss! way to go guys. This gentlemen is how you’re suppose to play against 1-6 teams. Im happy for today.

BK could give me early XXXmas gift by tossing zaire in there

    • dickasman - Oct 26, 2013 at 7:34 PM

on a side note, I’d totally nail lauren gardner. After a nice dinner and a movie of course!

      • dickasman - Oct 26, 2013 at 7:36 PM

yikes! she’s a fire crotcher, i take that back. Disclaimer: I’d only do it if she was a brunette!

    • dickasman - Oct 26, 2013 at 7:55 PM

      is that Redfield out there

      • getsome99 - Oct 26, 2013 at 8:10 PM

        #10? Yessiree!

  16. dickasman - Oct 26, 2013 at 7:38 PM

    OH CHRIST….Hendrix time starts w banger…..time out!

  17. elkona - Oct 26, 2013 at 7:39 PM

what if your comment on the live blog doesn’t show up. what, do you need an introduction from brian roberts to post there?

    • dickasman - Oct 26, 2013 at 7:47 PM

nope you have to send nudes to Keith and his girlfriend has to approve it. You have to be real good looking. Apparently he doesn’t like six pack abs w orange calvin Klein boxer briefs cuz I sent it and he doesn’t put my comments on there either.

    • dickasman - Oct 26, 2013 at 7:47 PM

it helps if you’re hott, skinny and democrat which is nearly impossible

  18. 10of14 - Oct 26, 2013 at 8:03 PM

Enough already; get Hendrix out of the game!! He is sucking down Molly’s before games to be in a program this long and suck this badly. I’m embarrassed for him. He has digressed to the point he needs to play special teams. Is this as good as we get with QB’s?? Fumble; bad handoffs; crap passes. This is an ND “fumble” with him in there. Go away.

  19. elkona - Oct 26, 2013 at 8:06 PM

Now my peer to peer site failed. Can’t see game. Computer probably infected with all kind of Ruskie viruses, too. This peer to peer stuff is bullsh*t. Which athletic director can I blame for this?

  20. ndgoldandblue - Oct 26, 2013 at 9:14 PM

Instead of five things I learned, here’s five things I wonder:
    1) If they were to run the table and finish 10-2, is this Notre Dame team good enough to win a BCS bowl game? I ask this because there’s no way a 10-2 Notre Dame team doesn’t get a BCS bowl invite, and as a fan, I’d want them to go to a BCS bowl even if they were conceivably overmatched. Just being there is good enough. But, would they be good enough to win if they got there, or would it be 2012/2006 redux?

    2) Is Andrew Hendrix college football’s version of Sarah Palin? If John McCain had won the election back in ’08, the country would have been one coronary embolism (conceivable, given his age) away from being led by that idiot from Alaska. An incredibly scary thought if you think about it. She actually thought “the Fed” was the FBI. If Tommy gets injured to the point where he can’t play, Notre Dame would be in the football equivalent of going to Sarah Palin. Let’s just hope Tommy stays healthy. This makes me wonder something else.

    3) Will the offense be worse off next year? Watt and Z. Martin are gone after this year. That means the offense will need to replace its two best linemen. Plus, Tommy’s gone. That may be music to the ears of many in ND Nation, but Everett had a very shaky first year as a starter, and he will be expected to “pick up where he left off” even though he will have not taken a snap in a game in over a year. A little hard to do. We’ve all seen what’s behind Tommy. That’s what’s going to be behind Everett next year. Rusty quarterback coming in with an unproven offensive line in front of him? It’s gotta be BCS or bust this year because this team will have a lot of growing pains next year.

    4) Speaking of the offensive line, is Hiestand known for coaching good pass blocking? I just wonder because the pass blocking has been much better under Hiestand than the run blocking. We’ve got some great running backs with all kinds of speed, but they have trouble getting going, and I don’t think it’s on them. The offensive line has shown that they’re more than capable of protecting Tommy. That throw Rees had to TJ on the sideline today was a classic example. Tommy could have had a smoke break in the time it took from the snap to the completion. But the running game still looks to be average, and the Irish may need to rely on the run game next year.

    5) Are Atkinson and Carlisle getting fazed out of the offense? I’m starting to think so. McDaniel and Folston appear to the be prototypical backs for this kind of offense, and the more finesse-style backs like Carlisle and Atkinson appear to be…I don’t know…like fitting a circle into a square hole. Even if you can force it in there, it still doesn’t fit right. I like the power running game that McDaniel and Folston bring. They’re decisive, they lower their pad level, and they run north and south. It’s not surprising they’re getting the carries right now. Expect to see more of Folston and less of Carlisle and Atkinson the rest of the season.

    • nudeman - Oct 26, 2013 at 10:20 PM

      1. When I watch other BCS teams, I just don’t think so. Every time I see another top 10 team, they look so much faster, and our #1 issue is speed on defense. Maybe next year when some of these guys like Redfield are ready to seriously contribute, but not now.

      2. Sarah Palin: The ultimate indictment. I see AH as more of a Ted Cruz knockoff. All sorts of wild stuff – birther, shut down the gov’t, Obama is a Kenyan. That’s Andrew. Drop back, ready, FIRE, aim, fumble, delay of game, etc.

      3. Watching those WRs tonight, you have to believe the O will be better next yr. Fuller is a guy we don’t even hear about that much and he’s supposedly the fastest one. Onwaulu is supposedly dynamite. Etc. I recall at the beginning of the year writing that WR was about a 5-6 on a sale of 10. I think right now it’s about a 7.5 and next year it could be an 8-9, and I haven’t even mentioned Robinson.

      4. Arrow pointing up on running game, with even more top talent coming in on the line, Bryant, Folston and our boy Cam who’s MUCH better than I thought. Plus, with EG a running threat, teams can’t load up the box.

      5. GAIII: Just when you think he’s making strides, he runs soft again. Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t think there’s ever anywhere to go when Carlisle gets the ball. I still believe in him but would like to see a more concerted effort to get him wide or in space. I still think they’ll give GAIII his carries every week, but the leash is shorter now.

      • heartofgoldandblue - Oct 26, 2013 at 11:01 PM

Was thinking the same thing regarding Amir. Seems to get the ball in obvious running downs and doesn’t have the chance to get much of a rhythm getting three carries in a row at the most. I see the burst we’ve been hearing about and love how he lowers his shoulders. I’d like to see him along w other backs besides GAIII get a chance to get a little bit if rhythm going. Was good to see Folston get a few in a row even though it was garbage time.

      • ndgoldandblue - Oct 26, 2013 at 11:09 PM

Agree with your assessment of Andrew, especially the part about him firing before he even aims. Seems to happen more often than not.

      • 4horsemenrideagain - Oct 28, 2013 at 9:56 AM

there are cerain “sports truths” that i come to, such as the designated hitter is a communist effort to destroy baseball, female sideline reporters are networks’ efforts to multi-task since having women cover sports allows networks to tout their open-mindedness and at the same time get the ratings they seek by appealing to lecherous men who love seeing erin andrews talk about anything, so long as she does it in tight clothes, and that the NFL has a man-crush on quarterbacks as evidenced by the countless ways defenders are prohibited from making contact with them.

to my list of truths i add the following, which admittedly is somewhat less profound than the examples above; cam mcdaniel is a solid running back and is only going to get better. look at the juke he put on s’ua cravens and the OLB in the SC game. in my day, if you juked someone like that people would yell “pick up your jock” and i believe the kids these days call it “breaking ankles.” i’m not saying it is going to happen, but a 1000 yard season isn’t entirely out of the question if he keeps his YPC average around 5 and keeps getting the ball.

  21. 25kgold - Oct 26, 2013 at 9:26 PM

ND Vs. Clemson in the Orange Bowl–Calling it now! Even though the Orange Bowl is reserved for the ACC Champ., It’ll go to the runner-up b/c FSU is going to the Nat. Championship Game Vs. Bama. Ohio St. will go undefeated, but will get a raw deal and get the Rose Bowl–Oregon will lose to Stanford. Book It!

    You’re welcome.

  22. getsome99 - Oct 26, 2013 at 9:43 PM

    @ goldandblue,

Not only our McDaniel and Folston getting the carries, they’re Blythe only ones who have been productive. We’ll see more Folston next week again I’m sure and with another good outing, it could be him and McDaniel down the stretch.

  23. getsome99 - Oct 26, 2013 at 9:45 PM

    Blythe? That’s weird.

    • ndgoldandblue - Oct 26, 2013 at 10:52 PM

LOL. Typo huh? I thought you were making an analogy at first.

  24. getsome99 - Oct 26, 2013 at 11:26 PM

Haha. iPhone auto correct has to be a 3rd grader. And for the record, I’d be on board with Palin waiting in the wings for McCain to croak. Who would stand a chance negotiating with her?

We just need to keep winning one game at a time now and let the polls work itself out. There will be enough losses from teams ahead of us to give us a chance to move in to the Top 15 going in to Stanford.

But Navy first. Our opponents overall are proving to be worthy teams as well. OU big win today, Mich St 7-1, etc. And we CAN win a BCS bowl game, which is the next step in this program’s progression. We could have beaten OU and we can beat Ohio State, Clemson, etc. These teams are not on the same level as Alabama.

As long as it’s not Alabama, we’ll be good enough by the end of the season to have a legitimate chance against anyone.

    • ndgoldandblue - Oct 26, 2013 at 11:38 PM

Your optimism overflows. I just hope you’re right. By the looks of Ohio State tonight, I’m not sure I’d like our chances.
