With no Conference Championship to play for, what defines a sucessful season for Notre Dame? Going forward, is it BCS or bust every year? How realistic a bar is that for a program like ND?

On the flipside, how bad would things have to get for any real pressure to be place on Kelly in his position? Say ND loses both remaining games and their bowl (whatever that would be); is going 7-6 enough to ignite the hotseat?

i believe it would be on fire this Byu game is a must win for BK especially with a trip to palo alto looming u cannot lose the last 4 at ND at not be feeling the heat next season

There are things that we’re all perplexed by, but there is no hot seat stuff going on, unless of course you’re measuring that by the idiots on the 4Horsemen Lounge. They want him fired every time ND doesn’t convert a 3rd and 8.

Having said that, there would probably some explaining to do when he meets with Swarbrick after the year is over if they lose to BYU, get pounded by Stanford, then lose to some clown team in a 3rd tier bowl.

Did anyone see NIU/Toledo last night? I have to admit:
        1) NIU looked pretty damn good
        2) Jordan Lynch is exactly the type of QB who would give ND fits.
        3) Both of the QBs are MUCH better than Tommy Rees and Andrew Hendrix.

I’d rather not see ND play NIU. I have bad feelings about that.

While I think the hot seat question posed by our friend from the North is interesting, 79’s suggestion that Kelley would be in trouble with a 7-5 regular season is just wrong.

No one. I repeat NO ONE expected ND to make it to the NC game last year. Most people were commenting we were 2 years away. BK got our team to over-perform last year. Amazing accomplishment not to be forgotten by anyone making decisions at ND.

Given we lost 85% of our offensive production from ’12 to ’13, some would say 2013 should have been seen as a rebuilding year. Our defense has not met expectations, which may only further bolster Manti’s legacy as a leader who made everyone around him better.

People like me, posting on these boards with no ramifications to anything we say, no matter how ill informed they are will not be deciding to adjust the heat on BK. Swarbrick will. And he’ll look at the totality of BK’s performance, ask some questions about some 2013 decisions, and enthusiastically and confidently plan along side with BK for a successful 2014.

I don’t think BYU is a must win for Kelly, and agree with Nude’s and Smitty’s comments. Too many bad things happend that were beyond any coach’s control this year.

Re Jordan Lynch, I think we have to take into account the very different level of competition he faces. Wasn’t it NIU and Lynch that got clobbered in a bowl last year? Or am I confusing him with someone else?

Maybe not hot, but at least the low setting on an old Volvo’s front seat warmer… This team is sitting at about the exact same position as the 2008 team record-wise, only then is it was the year after one of the worst seasons in history and now after one of the best in decades. His seat will be considerably warmer, and it should be, if it plays out the same way. So yeah, I’d say they’re pretty much all ‘must win’ games at this point. Will he be here next year if he loses out? Yes. Will he be here at the end of next year if he has the same record as this year? You can answer that for yourselves.

This game is a pretty much must win for BK IMO the pitt loss as bad as it was but then to turn around and lose out the rest of the way and be at 7-5 would be a sheer disaster and i would have to start questioning if change could be coming if next years not a resounding success. That said i hopin to finally see some emotion and leadership on senior day. im predicting a big day for the D behind Tuitt,Nix and Shembo after a week off and more great things from j smith. i think the ND D line will rise to this challenge similar to the usc and asu games.

Please define what you mean by “must win”.

To me that means “win or you’re gone”.

As infuriating as losing to BYU would be, zero chance it’s must win using that interpretation

      • regionirish - Nov 21, 2013 at 1:08 PM

It’s a must win for my mental well being and my liver…….

      • nudeman - Nov 21, 2013 at 1:36 PM

        Oh … got it

      • irish4life79 - Nov 21, 2013 at 1:38 PM

a must win in the sense a loss to be BYU could start a snow ball effect where the wheels of change may start to turn not immediate but the pressure would be on Kelly to have a great year next year plus i refuse to believe we are the ND of a fews years back a loss here might suggest that we are(Thats omitting TR ofcourse because he still is the QB SMH) BK doesnt want or need Questions of whether the program is regressing

      • bearcatirishfan - Nov 21, 2013 at 2:09 PM

Definitely for my liver. To paraphrase Dennis Leary, the morning after the Pitt game my liver was on the armchair next to the bed sipping a cup of coffee.

Lee Trevino said one time his alarm went off in the a.m. for his tee time, he looked at the glass of booze on his nightstand and it still had ice in it.

Keith, how do you think the team will react to Golson when he gets back?
