Keith, to end on a positive note, can you please lend your perspective as to where ND stands now in the CFB landscape versus the post Holtz era. With the Texas coaching search, it really puts into perspective how important it is for any school to make the right hire. Just thinking back to the Davie, O’Leary, Willingham, Weis eras makes me glad ND finally got it right w/ Kelly. Merry Christmas!

Will we see an article titled “Tribute to Tommy” at the end of the season?

While I have consistently lamented the apparent fact that Rees was the best we had, it’s hard not to admire his gumption and survival abilities. Clearly his position was tremendously helped by the injuries/bust of 5-star Dayne Crist, inexplicable lack of development in the athletically-superior Andrew Hendrix, academic “misjudgments” of Everett Golson, and the quit of Gunner Kiel. But it was still quite an achievement to head an upper-tier college football program for most of his four years given his (ultra) meager athletic/physical abilities. Yes, he was never very good, let alone great, but he was always there. Worthy of an honest article, IMO.

I agree with you 99.99% of the time but not here.

More has been written and said about this guy, good and bad, than has been written and said about anything except the Resurrection. What possibly could be written that hasn’t already been written 1000x before?

Fact is, for the reasons you cite, he has been tremendously fortunate at ND.
His skillset was C+ at best yet he’s started more games at CFB’s highest profile program than a lot of legit A+ players at lesser programs.

Congratulations son. You did your best. Wish you the very best in life. But the fat lady is tuning up.

      OMG

      • nudeman - Dec 19, 2013 at 1:03 PM

Plus it would just piss me off force me to unload another 400 anti Rees diatribes
And I know no one wants that kerfuffle

        OMG

      • bernhtp - Dec 19, 2013 at 1:09 PM

Agreed about the amount written about the subject, but that militates even more for a closing summary and retrospective to put it all into context. Bonus points will be awarded for previously inside information and quotes by the coaches involved.

      • nudeman - Dec 19, 2013 at 3:19 PM

I don’t know … seems like asking for Rocky XX, or another Warren Commission Report.

I suppose the first chapter could be titled “ND Called? You’re Shi**ing Me, Right Dad?”

      • heartofgoldandblue - Dec 19, 2013 at 4:44 PM

        Nude…that was freeeaking hilarious

      • idratherbeinsouthbend - Dec 20, 2013 at 12:16 AM

gotta give nudey a thumbs up for kerfuffle

  3. runners00 - Dec 19, 2013 at 12:17 PM

I am done with the loving/hating Tommy Rees discussion (I land somewhere in the middle: he was a very serviceable backup but was still a division 1 backup). I’m done with coordinators departing (but recognize that it’s nice to see someone want our coordinators as head coaches).

My question is this: what does Stephon Tuitt’s return do for the program? I mean, we know he is coming back to get his college degree.

  4. paulhargis53 - Dec 19, 2013 at 12:23 PM

There us nothing to respond to Bob. You’re sad comment speaks for itself.

Tell me, how does one get so bad at posting like yourself? Did you have to work at it? Or is it a gift?

Bob suddenly has a sack again because getsome is backing him up. Check out the myriad of woeful postings on the redshift article. Woefully inept.

“Notre Dame’s next Shamrock Series game will take place in Indianapolis against a familiar opponent: Purdue.

The Sept. 13, 2014 matchup will take place at 7:30 p.m. ET at Lucas Oil Stadium. In addition, the in-state rivals have added future matchups as the series will resume in 2020.”

I think Kelly coaches well and is a solid, tough leader, passionate and hands on. He deals with adversity and recruits admirably. That being said, 8-4 this season was not one of his more noteworthy acheivements, but it’s happened to better than he; starting Tommy Rees for 3 years was a poor decision, one that as an experience winning coach he knew of the consequences and should have had much better contingency plans. I think he will make a stellar showing next season, and I think he knows it, too.

  7. jcodaniels - Dec 19, 2013 at 1:28 PM

Kieth, first time commenter, long time reader of your work. Love it. Well it looks as though I will again be depending on Amazon to get my wife’s Christmas gift to my house on time this year as I am terrible at getting something ahead of time. My question to you is, do you think it is OK that I got her something Notre Dame which is basically for me. Last year it was an electronic that was basically for me as well that had an ND background on it when she opened it. I think my love for Notre Dame is taking affect on my marriage, haha. PS, Think we make the playoffs next season? Another strong schedule, a young, dynamic offense..just need a leader to develop on defense..(Jaylon?) Anyway…Happy Holidays Keith!

  8. goirish0112 - Dec 19, 2013 at 1:40 PM

Keith – enjoy your blog immensely. Do you know why paulhargis53 is infatuated with mediocrebob?

  9. paulhargis53 - Dec 19, 2013 at 1:56 PM

I’m not infatuated with anyone, except the man in the mirror.

I’m trash talking with a guy that can’t hold his own. Everything was set for me to disappear. getsome showed up and all of a sudden “The Mediocre One” got a backbone. Such a shame, he was 12 short hours away from me leaving these boards.

    • tburke9601 - Dec 19, 2013 at 2:04 PM

Dont leave. You will be missed.

    • getsome99 - Dec 19, 2013 at 2:14 PM

Bob’s in your mirror now? This is getting weird.

      • paulhargis53 - Dec 19, 2013 at 3:26 PM

Did you seriously just type that 1st sentence out loud?
That’s the equivalent to I know you are but what am I.

You were showing some promise, but you ran out of steam.
Oof. That was bad. I’m embarassed for you.

    • getsome99 - Dec 19, 2013 at 3:03 PM

The question was directed at Keith. Let him answer.

  10. tburke9601 - Dec 19, 2013 at 2:02 PM

Keith, what are your predictions for the following bowl games? Winner. Score. Why. And what bowl game are you most looking forward to watching?

    BCS Championship
    Rose
    Orange
    Fiesta
    Sugar
    Cotton
    Pinstripe

  11. paulhargis53 - Dec 19, 2013 at 2:13 PM

Gentleman. The troll is being trolled. He’s using my own material back on me, but is trying just the same.

In other news, when gets none showed up. Bob went from six to midnite in his pants.

When they get to NYC for the bowl game, a serious tournament of tummysticks is going to break out.

    • getsome99 - Dec 19, 2013 at 3:01 PM

      Nudeman-esque

      • paulhargis53 - Dec 19, 2013 at 3:31 PM

I know you get all funny in the pants when you type nude man.
But I’m sorry to say that this thinly veiled attempt is not fooling anyone.

I will leave it to you to discern what that means. It may be awhile, I’m sure you’ll have to look up discern in the dictionary.
Geez, I thought the bob screen name was mediocre….silly me.

      • nudeman - Dec 19, 2013 at 3:40 PM

        Paul
I told you, getsome is an even better target (or worse, depending on how you look at it)

But I think he mainlines straight methedrine, so he can little bury you with >100 mesages in less than an hour. I’ve seen it.

I realize you’re getting bored with Bob, but this is like waving a red flag infront of a bull

        Like Stalingrad
        A war of attrition

      • getsome99 - Dec 19, 2013 at 3:56 PM

        Awww. How cute.

      • mediocrebob - Dec 19, 2013 at 7:04 PM

Is that the best you’ve got?

    • idratherbeinsouthbend - Dec 20, 2013 at 12:19 AM

      tummysticks…..classic

you keep dropping those dimes and I’ll drag your ass back here if you try to leave.

  12. chejoe - Dec 19, 2013 at 2:56 PM

It seems to me that Kelly has been snake-bit by quarterbacks during his entire time at ND: first, Clausen graduates early, rather than play for him; next, Crist was not as good as we all thought (neither was Hendrix) and Dayne was injury prone; then, Kiel decides to transfer *right before* Golson gets kicked out of school. While Rees did all he could, and it was better than most (including me) give him credit for, he was obviously thrust into this role (repeatedly) despite simply not being the right man for the job. As we head into Rees’ final game in an ND uniform, I cannot help but wonder what the future holds for the ND offense. The one year that Kelly had as least *most* of his wishes at QB the Irish played for the title. How do you see it playing out?

  13. fnc111 - Dec 19, 2013 at 3:44 PM

Is one of Kelly’s former assistant coaches, Greg Forest, an option as Quarterback coach? He has a long history with CBK.

  14. rocket1988 - Dec 19, 2013 at 5:29 PM

Alright here are some questions Mr. Arnold
    Better beach: Hermosa or Manhattan?
    Steak or Sushi?
    Ducks or Kings?
Favorite ND athlete of the past, present, or future?
And last, your dream venue to cover and ND game?

  15. nicenirish - Dec 19, 2013 at 6:36 PM

Questions; Is the elimination of Purdue off the schedule an attempt to add more strength to the schedule with the upcoming Playoff Format? Or is it more about making room to add ACC opponents, and bring Michigan back?

  16. irishdrg1 - Dec 19, 2013 at 9:25 PM

Keith as always really appreciate your writings. God Bless you and your family. You do a great job really hope you keep it up. I really don’t understand not playing MZ and using Rees as backup, watching TF run for 140 and get ‘benched’ the next week, WHAT gives? thanks again OG IRISH

  17. doc-domer79 - Dec 19, 2013 at 9:50 PM

    Keith

Great place to read your take on things. And to be entertained. Even if I’m a “sanctimonious ass.”

Question- Shamrock Series- ever in Florida? Orlando? Tampa? Jax? Lots of great stadiums and recruits galore.

    Thanks for running this site.

  18. idratherbeinsouthbend - Dec 20, 2013 at 12:20 AM

    Keith….real question….

Who will be missed more, Diaco or Martin?

  19. irishpuma - Dec 20, 2013 at 12:31 AM

Keith I am your favorite right?

Seriously who are your favorite posters and who are your least likely to read or have a drink with.

  20. domerboyirish - Dec 20, 2013 at 9:28 AM

Keith, I would really like an update on the offensive coordinator position. I think this hire is a significant point of discussion. A great hire also means that we’ll keep our recruits. A weak hire may let those kids start second guessing. I’m hoping that the silence we are getting is because the guy that Kelly may be targeting is working a bowl game and we are waiting until after the bowl games to start discussions. Are there ANY rumors floating around?

    Thanks and Merry Christmas.

  21. ndfenian - Dec 20, 2013 at 12:11 PM

For Keith or anybody that has a thought: why didn’t we see the offense employ screen passes to the running backs this year? Does Kelly not believe in the screen game to backs?

    • domerboyirish - Dec 20, 2013 at 2:39 PM

I asked this a couple of times this year. Never really hear a good answer.
