Watch Lists: Golson, Russell and Smith earn mention

Jul 8, 2014, 8:39 AM EDT

Notre Dame at USC AP

A trio of Notre Dame football players find themselves on the watch list for some very impressive postseason awards. Quarterback Everett Golson is on the Maxwell Award’s watch list while junior cornerback KeiVarae Russell and sophomore linebacker Jaylon Smith were both selected to the Bednarik’s watch list.

The Maxwell Award is given to college football’s player of the year while the Bednarik honors the defensive player of the year. Manti Te’o won both after the 2012 season.

That Golson finds himself on this list gives you an idea of the expectations for the rising senior quarterback, even after a season off. After drawing rave reviews for his workouts at the Elite 11 camp, where Golson is serving as a counselor, the Irish quarterback will be the engine that drives Notre Dame’s offense in 2014.

Both Russell and Smith are on this list based more on promise than production. Russell has started all 26 games of his college career at cornerback after joining the Irish as a running back. He had 51 tackles last season and eight pass breakups. Smith’s impressive freshman season had him finishing third on the team in tackles with 67 and second with 6.5 tackles for loss.

A slew of other watch list announcements are set for later this week.

      Wait…I thought he was a tO$U homer??

I think it’s the complete opposite of that. Smith and Russell have both produced and deserve the pre season attention. Golson has barely even played college ball. EG is on the list because he plays at Notre Dame. He’s done nothing to say he’s the best in the nation. You might want to edit that paragraph.

Being on the list doesn’t mean he’s the best in the nation. It just means he could make a run at the award. It’s not like he’s a heisman preseason list.

Having said that, he is on it because he’s at notre dame and because he went to the NCG in his RS freshman season. Expectations…

Settle down….there’s over 60 players on the maxwell watch list. Names like Jameis Winston and TJ Yeldon but also names like Trevor Knight and Dak Prescott who haven’t done much either but have the potential for a break out season. Picking a QB who led his team to the NC as a freshman, although sometimes shakily and with some assistance, who progressed greatly (in my opinion) through that time, and who has a talented supporting cast is hardly a far fetched candidate to potentially have a big year….IMHO
