Report: Hernia surgery to keep Heuerman out for start of camp

Jul 28, 2014, 4:44 PM EDT

Heuerman

Notre Dame’s inexperienced tight end depth chart has taken a hit. A report by Chris Hine of the Chicago Tribune revealed that sophomore tight end Mike Heuerman is working his way back from hernia surgery and won’t be ready for the start of fall camp.

Hine was cover the Big Ten Media Days in Chicago when Heuerman’s brother Jeff, Ohio State’s tight end, revealed the news.

“He’s working to get back,” Jeff Heuerman told Hine.

Heuerman’s injury leaves the tight end position to senior Ben Koyack and now only features Durham Smythe as a returning player, with Smythe and Heuerman both redshirting in 2013. Newcomers Tyler Luatua and Nic Weishar are set to begin their career next week as well.

Hine’s request for an update on Heuerman’s recovery timetable went unanswered. Notre Dame opens fall camp next Monday at Culver Military Academy.

    http://www.sportsherniasouth.com/Sports-Hernia-Surgery-Questions.html

This FAQ suggests a 4-6 week recovery time following surgery. Of course, this causes one to ask WTF with respect to Tuitt last year.

I’m just thinking out aloud. What would be worse? Hernia or Herpes? Hernia or Hemorrhoidectomy?

      • dickasman - Jul 29, 2014 at 2:02 AM

I’ve has all of the above but Hernia. I would guess its similar to hemorrhoids bulging out?

      • irish737788 - Jul 29, 2014 at 10:42 PM

Seriously you have the mind of a 12yr old! And that’s an insult to kids that age! What hours do mommy and daddy let you play on the computer? Go away you punk, you bother the posters on here like a dreadful hat!

  2. johngaltisspeaking - Jul 28, 2014 at 6:03 PM

Why do so many of our players get hurt. Even at the NFL level most of guy are out.. I guess its from taking a 3 star who is suppose to weigh 200 and making them 245 by fat and muscle…

    • papadec - Jul 28, 2014 at 7:12 PM

jg – your ignorance is surpassed by only your stupidity.

      • 1historian - Jul 29, 2014 at 1:28 PM

Gotta disagree with ya on that – they’re neck and neck

      • papadec - Jul 29, 2014 at 3:29 PM

hist – ignorance is just the lack of information – it can be remedied. Stupidity? Especially in jg’s case……….well there is no remedy.

    • irishmob89 - Jul 28, 2014 at 7:38 PM

Yeah, when a 5-star recruit from Alabama or U$C gets hurt, I’m sure you say the same thing, except you would replace fat and muscle with ‘steroids’. LOL

      Cheat on. U$C Trojans.

      • johngaltisspeaking - Jul 28, 2014 at 8:14 PM

What are you talking about.. USC is making a huge turn around. Isn’t forgiving and giving a second chance your entire Christian motto. Hypocritical

      • irishmob89 - Jul 28, 2014 at 11:24 PM

You’re absolutely right John, as fellow Irish fans, we should forgive our most hated rivals for cheating. If not, it makes us hypocritical *sarcasm*

Cheat on U$C Trojans…one vacated win at a time :)

      • johngaltisspeaking - Jul 29, 2014 at 12:10 AM

USC is now ranked number 9 with 13 Recruits the lowest amount of recruits in the top 10. The average is second to Alabama. USC will and can out recruit the SEC. And when it comes down to it, I would rather see USC win NC after NC than the SEC. Call me whatever you want but Notre Dame is dropping and will continue to drop with a recruiting class loaded with 3 star wonders. Yes the end is near Irish fans, this year will be a coin toss after that get ready for pure punishment from the trojans for the next 20 years because this time they are not letting up. I really hope we have a new coach by the end of the year with another 8 win season and trip to the Happy Chicken Roaster bowl to see Brian K try to prop up his bowl record against a sub par team in the Big ten or ACC.

      • papadec - Jul 29, 2014 at 6:00 PM

jg – I don’t know what you’re looking at – espn has ND @ #14, followed by ucla & then usc. Like I said – we can remedy your ignorance, but not your stupidity.

well another 5 Star out – South headed to UCLA.. Soso I am hearing is a LOCK at Baylor and Tevon Coney is out…. so who is left and will we even make it to 20 this recruiting cycle. It looks to me like our better recruiting days are behind us. With Penn State in full force, Urban Meyer signing various players from catholic schools, Texas is starting to recruit and of course USC and UCLA owning Southern California its not looking to good boys. Where is our top tier talent coming to play defense this cycle ?

    • mediocrebob - Jul 28, 2014 at 10:48 PM

“…not looking *TOO* good”. Grammar is on an NAIA level.

U need to stay off the twitter, bud. Get a haircut and get a real job. Clean your act up and don’t be a slob. Get it together like your big brother U$C. Why don’t you get a haircut and get a real job….

    • upthera44 - Jul 29, 2014 at 12:15 PM

As far as I can tell, there is nothing to 99% of the alarmist stuff this wanker (JohnGalt) writes. There’s nothing new on Bilal as far as I can tell. He’s still predicted to go to ND.

      • papadec - Jul 31, 2014 at 1:04 AM

upthe – he just throws that stuff out to get a reaction. Just like any three year old – any attention is better than no attention.

  5. fnc111 - Jul 28, 2014 at 9:52 PM

Who cares? Following recruiting 365 is for losers. ND wins, they get big time recruits. ND loses, they don’t get very many elite recruits. It’s pretty simple Mr. Fake fan.

Two years ago today Max Redfield was a lock to play for your USC Trojans. How’d that work out?

    • johngaltisspeaking - Jul 28, 2014 at 11:15 PM

Well he still isn’t playing for us so what’s your point.

      • irishmob89 - Jul 29, 2014 at 12:38 AM

Games are won on the field, not in recruiting rankings. Like fnc111 said, anyone who follows recruiting are losers. Recruiting isn’t always about landing the top class, it’s about recruiting the positions you need to fill. Furthermore, you act like Notre Dame can’t recruit with the big boys down south or with your boys, U$C. Last I checked, as you would say, our “SEC talent running backs” are from Florida. 4-star Tarean Folston and 5-star Greg Bryant. Max Redfield, 5-star who dropped your sissy Trojans like a bad habit and came to Notre Dame, Jaylon Smith, 5-star committed to us over master recruiter Urban Meyer…Isaac Rochell from Georgia, got multiple offers from SEC schools, including Alabama, chose Notre Dame. CJ Sanders, 4-star receiver from California, chose Notre Dame over the likes of U$C and other SEC schools who offered him. I could go on and on. You’re absolutely ignorant if you think Notre Dame can’t recruit with other top programs in the country. Think of some new material.

      • johngaltisspeaking - Jul 29, 2014 at 9:52 AM

Notre Dame yes gets some top talent but they can’t get enough top talent to load up on depth… Looks at USC class right now and what it will be … You can’t compete for a NC when you end up 16 or 17 in the rankings.

  6. idratherbeinsouthbend - Jul 29, 2014 at 12:38 AM

This wouldn’t happen in the SEC, right JG?

    • dickasman - Jul 29, 2014 at 2:05 AM

I the SEX, yeah, fa sho!

  7. getsome99 - Jul 29, 2014 at 12:54 AM

Don’t forget the skill players ND is pulling out of Texas and away from UT and OU.

USC’s recruiting classes are always overrated. That’s why so many of their drafted players turn out to be busts in the NFL. The track record over the past decade has not been good for former Trojans. Their “dominant run” was a sham as their roster was loaded with ineligible players.

Jim Mora has shifted the power in Southern California back to UCLA. With Stanford and Oregon still going strong in the north, USC’s best days are behind them. They’ll be competing with Utah and Oregon State for a spot in the top half of the conference. With Sarkisian as head coach, 9 wins and an early Dec bowl game is what USC will be celebrating every year.

A profound quote I found of johngaltisspeaking: “I find it funny how you rip on kiffen when he has a better record at USC then Kelly has at ND”

Okay, now I know for a fact that John is a U$C fan because he can’t even do basic Math LOL

John always makes me laugh but the guy is a total retard. Anytime I scroll through the comments, he’s on here periodically throughout the day posting new comments. I understand that the guy probably doesn’t have a job, but obsessing with Notre Dame? Kind of odd if you ask me. At the same time, I am honored that John picked us to troll over their other Pac-12 rivals like UCLA, considering UCLA is the real football school in Los Angeles. UCLA will easily beat U$C for the next five years at the least, maybe more.

    • papadec - Jul 29, 2014 at 3:41 PM

im89 – of course he picked ND over ucla. ucla has a so cal following – ND has an intl following.

Mike, everyone’s recovery can be different. the soreness and swelling will dissipate, not in three to four weeks, but more like two months. when things do not happen in the three or four weeks, it tends to discourage. just stay with it, be patient, and be solaced by the fact that that area will be stronger than ever. do not doubt that your recovery will better than you thought. looking forward to seeing you back on the field.

  11. johngaltisspeaking - Jul 29, 2014 at 10:27 AM

Prentice McKinney is looking around ! Man this is gonna stuck if we start losing 3 star players. At this point I think its time we bring in Damage Control…….

  12. johngaltisspeaking - Jul 29, 2014 at 10:49 AM

More BS coming out of 247sports Blue and Gold. Tom Loy reporting Ykili Ross to ND. Even ND fans are saying that nothing is going on in the news and this his way of selling memberships. The state of ND Football looks like its in meltdown mode as their biggest rivals lands 1 blue chip after another.

        Now that’s funny!

  13. irishdog80 - Jul 29, 2014 at 11:08 AM

The 2014 NFL First Round had four players that were 5 star out of high school, thirteen that were 4 star, twelve that were 3 star, and three that were ranked a 2 star out of high school. Seems about right and consistent with the recruiting classes for ND over the past 4-5 years…a mix of 5, 4 and 3 stars. The key is to identify ascending players no matter their “star” rankings and develop them to their full potential. Based upon ND’s ascending number of NFL draft picks, I trust Kelly and his staff and their evaluation of talent.

    • johngaltisspeaking - Jul 29, 2014 at 12:09 PM

First off Draft Picks mean nothing ! Its not if they get drafted its what they do in the NFL. If you look at that stat ND Draft picks hardly ever pan out. Compare that to Texas, USC or Alabama and they have a ton of success in the NFL. Take for example this year, Chris Watt was carted off the field in San Diego, And Nix is so out of shape he keeps hurting himself. Now look at the players coming in from Alabama. They are lean mean NFL quality football players. This goes back to my statement that you can’t take a 3 star and try to add 60 pounds on a frame that is meant to be carrying 180 pounds. Recruiting a 3 star 280 lb Defensive Tackle is not the same as Alabama recruiting a 4 or 5 star 280 lb Defensive Tackle. Furthermore your theory doesn’t hold true. If you look at the facts the teams recruiting in the top 10 are the teams that play for the NC. ND talent level and strength of schedule puts them at a 7 or 8 win season this year. This year our recruiting class will fall on its ass and from here on out it will be all damage control. Without guys like Tuitt , Nix, Shembo etc this team isn’t going anywhere.

    • irishdog80 - Jul 29, 2014 at 1:07 PM

So, if I follow your reasoning, you are saying that being an NFL 1st round pick…a 5 star quality player by the NFL’s standards…means nothing–it’s what they do on the field that matters. Is that what you are saying?

  14. 4horsemenrideagain - Jul 29, 2014 at 12:34 PM

Try as I might, I can’t fathom a more absurd or pathetic past time than trolling an opposing team’s board in efforts to antagonize the readers or try to convince those readers of how lousy their team is. As hobbies go, this ranks alongside graffiti artists and guys who put flaming bags of dog crap on other people’s doorsteps. I guess there’s just something about the thrill of the moment for these types.

The only other observation worth making is that john’s “insights” aren’t even based in fact, accurate or interesting. Instead, they’re just inflammatory and ill-conceived attempts at being provocative. So while he may be a very dedicated troll, and one with an abundance of time on his hands, he’s not particularly good at it.

    • johngaltisspeaking - Jul 29, 2014 at 12:49 PM

Argue the statement not some made up crap in your head. I am an Irish fan who happens to be in the same boat many other Irish fans are in. We believe Brian K is a lousy coach and that he will peter out shortly and hopefully the admins won’t make the same mistake twice. But that doesn’t mean I am less of a fan or an SEC fan or a USC fan. All I can say is we have one crazy fan base. CFB all comes down to recruiting ! Clemson is not paying its players and neither is USC. Kids want to go play for winning programs. USC can recruit anywhere in the country as they are a national program. Clemson can compete with anyone one in the SEC. ND can’t compete in big ten country anymore and its slim pickings from California and the SEC. Add to the fact that last year we looked like a MAC football team and we got pulverized by Alabama. Brian K run is over at ND its time to rinse and repeat.

      • nudeman - Jul 29, 2014 at 2:32 PM

The ND fan base is no crazier than any other.

In fact compared to that of the SEC teams, we’re probably tame. Football truly is religion down there and I know you know that.

Check out this Bama idiot who made himself famous for all the wrong reasons a couple years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUIbaHwkDto

We have the same combination of clowns (self included) as every other fan base: Rose colored glass guys who think ND can do no wrong, cynics like you and fnc and c4 who think everything sucks and realists like me who call a spade a spade.

      • johngaltisspeaking - Jul 29, 2014 at 3:48 PM

nudeman great video…. Reminds that CFB is right around the corner. LOL

  15. 4horsemenrideagain - Jul 29, 2014 at 2:12 PM

“…some made up crap in your head.” your words, not mine.

USC isn’t paying players? in Reggie Bush’s case it was an agent that gave the parents a house, but I suppose that’s really a distinction worth making in defense of USC, its program and its values. oddly, no mention of pete carroll slinking out the backdoor in the middle of the night before the NCAA slapped USC with sanctions. another indicia of honorable, decent people.

    • johngaltisspeaking - Jul 29, 2014 at 4:21 PM

Dickhead they paid their dues now get over it. USC is on its way back and once they load their roster with Blue Chip 4 and 5 star players its back to kicking our ass by 24 points a game.

      • irishmob89 - Jul 29, 2014 at 8:16 PM

You can recruit all the 5-star players you want. When your coach is called ‘Seven Win Steve’ for a reason. U$C’s best days are behind them. They proved they could only win by providing special perks to their elite talent. When U$C plays by the rules like everyone else, their ceiling is, 7 or 8, maybe 9 wins at the most with Sarkisian. They can’t beat the likes of Notre Dame, Stanford, and Oregon. Heck, they can’t even compete in their own city. UCLA runs that city now. As a Notre Dame fan, that has to thrill you John!!!

      • 4horsemenrideagain - Jul 30, 2014 at 9:17 AM

    Papadec – your 7/29 3:29.

(FYI – I’m in the final stages of planning another 3 state crime spree, thankyouverymuch for your timely suggestion.)

    Good point

At the risk of repeating my bad self, (which I will do many times), – today is July 29. 31 and a wakeup until the kickoff!!!

JG – Atlas Shrugged Part 3 is scheduled for release within the next few months. The first few parts weren’t particularly well done but the idea is out there and that’s what counts.

    • papadec - Jul 29, 2014 at 11:15 PM

hist – if you manage to elude the tri-state law enforcement officials, or if you’re allowed to travel further south after the next bust out, will you be heading to the Meadowlands for the CUSE game? I plan on flying to Providence on SEP 4th to watch the Blue game with the kid brother & nephew. Then head to New York to take care of my mother for a few weeks, then back to Providence to go to the CUSE game. Maybe we can grab a tailgate brew together before/after that CUSE game. That goes for any of the other ND fans – trolls not included.

  17. getsome99 - Jul 30, 2014 at 1:34 AM

Draft picks give every indication of how much talent a program produces if it does anything at all. It doesn’t necessarily measure how good your team is in terms of W-L’s, but overall talent yes. What these players do with their pro careers beyond that has more to do with their own personal development under pro coaching.

Notre Dame fell off in the Davie and Willingham years, but you can expect to see this trend to continue under Kelly. Even with a backup (or 3rd string) QB last season, there’s only been one team in the past 2 years that has shown they’re decisively better than ND. Including USC. Twice. It’s going to be tough for USC if they can’t cheat.

  18. getsome99 - Jul 30, 2014 at 1:40 AM

Most of USC’s 4 and 5 star recruits don’t even make it to their sophomore seasons. Not since they can’t cheat anymore and get paid in the side. This is why class rankings are irrelevant with USC. They always end up with a bunch of 4 and 5 star underclassmen wearing street clothes on the sideline and a two deep full of spares.
