Report: Former Irish assistant Haywood takes Pitt job

ESPN’s Joe Schad is reporting that former Notre Dame offensive coordinator Mike Haywood is taking over the Pitt football program. Haywood would replace Dave Wannstedt, who was asked to resign after six seasons.

Haywood played at Notre Dame and joined the inaugural coaching staff of Charlie Weis, coaching both running backs and coordinating the offense before taking the head coaching job at Miami of Ohio before the 2009 season. The RedHawks went 1-11 in Haywood’s first season, but rallied for nine wins this year, including an upset victory over Northern Illinois that won the MAC championship game and sent Miami to the GoDaddy.com Bowl.

Haywood’s tenure at Notre Dame was hardly one that had Irish fans believing he was destined for great things, and many turned Haywood into a scapegoat of what went wrong during Weis’ post BCS seasons in South Bend when Haywood took over playcalling duties. When Haywood interviewed and accepted the head coaching position at Miami, few were worried that the staff lost anything but a good coach on the recruiting trail.

The Irish will see Haywood and his new team next September 24th when the Irish travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Panthers.
