Many Irish fan’s worst fears were confirmed this morning by head coach Charlie Weis, as he revealed that Michael Floyd’s regular season is over.
“The only thing I do know, Floyd was going to be operated on this morning,” Weis said. “I would anticipate him missing the rest of the regular season and being available for the bowl game, if we chose to go in that direction.”
The question of a medical redshirt was broached immediately, and Weis had this to say on the prospect of Floyd applying for one.
“When we went from 11 games to 12 games, you can play in the first four games of a 12 game regular season, and still be eligible for a medical redshirt.”
While Floyd qualifies for a redshirt, the case is probably moot with Floyd, because there’s little chance that Floyd will spend five years in South Bend before moving on to the greener pastures of the NFL.
The Irish will now have to retool their offensive attack, and Weis will start looking for a viable replacement for his star wide receiver.
