Irish snag blue-chip DT amidst transition

Anyone who worried that the lame duck Irish coaching staff was going to phone in their recruiting commitments with Charlie Weis no longer in charge got a pleasant surprise last night.

Louis Nix, one of the top defensive tackles in the country, committed to assistant coach Tony Alford Tuesday, making his switch from Miami official.

“He told me about the situation with the coaches and he said if he wasn’t going to be there, he thought I should still go there, and that Notre Dame was the best school for me,” Nix told Irish Sports Daily. “For someone to tell me that, who possibly wouldn’t be coaching me, that’s something worth listening to.”

Notre Dame fans should be impressed by the work of Alford and hopefully he’s impressing the future coach as well.

Nix’s is a consensus top 100 recruit in the country, rated the seventh-best defensive tackle by Rivals.

It’s kind of sad that Weis has started to reel in the elite defensive line prospects that he missed on during the early years of his tenure. If he had this kind of success back in season one and two, he’d still be coaching the Irish.
