ESPN’s Chris Mortensen is reporting that Charlie Weis will become Todd Haley’s offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs.
The move makes a lot of sense, reuniting Weis with former Patriots personnel whiz Scott Pioli and Haley, who Weis coached with as assistants at the New York Jets. Mort reports that the signing will be announced in the next 24 to 48 hours.
As expected, the Bears were also interested in bringing Weis on board to offensive coordinator after Lovie Smith’s staff was purged, but apparently the Chiefs’ offer won out.
Haley has had a vacancy at offensive coordinator since he dismissed Chan Gailey early in the season. He was asked about Weis during his season-ending press conference.
“Charlie’s a guy I have a great amount of respect for as a coach,” Haley said. “He’s a coach that system-wise, I would say we’re as close as you can be. Charlie’s a guy I consider a friend and I’ve talked to throughout the year, no different from some of the other guys I lean on for things and advice.”
