Irish land first 2013 recruit in OL Steve Elmers

Steve Elmer

Lost in the shuffle of the Irish’s 31-13 victory yesterday was the news that Notre Dame also received its first recruiting commitment for the class of 2013. It just goes to show how important the victory was, because losing track of 6-foot-6, 300-pound offensive tackle Steve Elmer is an accomplishment.

The junior offensive tackle from Midland, Michigan profiles as one of the best offensive linemen of the 2013 class and has offers from Wisconsin, Syracuse, Michigan, Michigan State and Mississippi State with many more on the way. Making things even sweeter for Irish fans is that Elmer was a coveted prospect of the home-state Wolverines as well, and was in attendance as an unofficial visitor in Michigan Stadium last weekend.

Elmer spoke to IrishSportsDaily.com’s Christian McCollum about the experience, which may have hinted at where Elmer’s head was even then.

“I was there as Michigan’s guest, so it was good from a Michigan standpoint, but a little bit painful from a Notre Dame fan’s standpoint,” Elmer said.

Elmer was in South Bend for the Irish’s victory and committed before the game. He was a guest of the Irish at the spring game and has been at Notre Dame’s summer camps the last two years as well.

He’s the first commitment to the class of 2013.
