Quick Take: Newsome came to campus and earned his scholarship during camp over the summer, impressing the Irish staff and quickly accepting the scholarship offer. That offer was validated by an impressive performance at the Semper-Fidelis All-American game.
He’ll have a year to watch and learn while getting stronger. Long, lanky frame projects nicely for specialist.
What it means for the Irish roster: The heir apparent to Kyle Brindza, that the Irish staff sees Newsome as a potential fit for all their kicking needs shows an efficiency with specialist scholarships that you need to be happy about if you’re an Irish fan.
Whether he can do all three jobs remains to be seen, but it’s the type of offer and gamble that makes a ton of sense.
