Quick Take: Frustrated by some of Notre Dame’s struggles in short-yardage and goal line situations? Enter Tony Jones. At almost 220-pound from the moment he hits campus, Jones is a physical running back the Irish haven’t had in the stable since Robert Hughes.
An excellent two-sport athlete at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, Jones will try to play baseball as well in South Bend but arrives on campus with a chance to find a role in this offensive immediately.
What he means to the Irish: With both Josh Adams and Dexter Williams starting their eligibility clocks in 2015 there’s opportunity behind that duo and Tarean Folston. Jones is a recruit that the Irish staff thinks is underrated—a good mix of physicality, vision and patience. It’ll be interesting to see how quickly he makes the transition to the college game, where he’ll be asked to pick up the tough yards.
Even if Jones is the baseball player, the Irish already have their home run hitter in Adams, a back who can go the distance. Jones might be the guy they call on to move the chains early, with the chance to do so much more as he develops.
